Simone Biles Named Sports Illustrated’s 2024 Sportsperson of the Year

Simone Biles has added another prestigious accolade to her already unparalleled legacy. The Olympic gold medalist has been named Sports Illustrated’s “Sportsperson of the Year,” becoming the first Olympian to receive the honor since LeBron James in 2012.

    A Dominant 2024 Performance

Biles, often referred to as “The GOAT,” cemented her status as one of the greatest athletes of all time with a stellar performance at the 2024 Summer Olympics in France. She secured four medals, including three golds in the team competition, individual all-around, and vault exercise. Her dominance on the world stage captivated audiences and solidified her place in history as an icon of her sport.

    Reflecting on Her Legacy

Despite her incredible accomplishments, Biles remains humble about her impact. “I don’t think the reality has set in of what I’ve exactly done in the sport,” she shared. “I can see it, and I hear it from people, and I see a glimpse of it, but the full magnitude I don’t think I’ve realized just yet. Maybe I’ll realize it when I retire and look back in a couple of years like, ‘Damn, she was good.’ Because I can see that, but I do it every day. So for me, it’s normal.”

    Looking Ahead to 2028

As anticipation builds for the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles, fans are eager to know whether Biles will compete. While she hasn’t made a decision, she acknowledged the complexities of returning to the Olympic stage. “If you go back, you’ll be greedy. Those are the consequences,” Biles said. “But that’s also your decision to decide. What sacrifices would be made if I go back now? When you’re younger, it’s like prom, college. Now it’s like starting a family, being away from my husband. What’s really worth it?”

    Recognizing Other Achievements

In addition to Biles’ honor, Sports Illustrated recognized several other standout individuals in 2024. Colorado football star and Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter was named Breakout Star of the Year, Basketball Hall of Famer Dikembe Mutombo received the Muhammad Ali Legacy Award posthumously, and Jessica Berman, NWSL commissioner, was honored as the inaugural Innovator of the Year.

    Conclusion

Simone Biles’ recognition as Sportsperson of the Year is a testament to her unparalleled talent, resilience, and influence both on and off the mat. As she contemplates her future, one thing is certain: her legacy as a trailblazer and inspiration for athletes worldwide is firmly cemented.
