Seun Kuti Clarifies Stance on European Colonialism, Stays Neutral in Burna Boy-Speed Darlington Feud

Afrobeats musician and social activist Seun Kuti has taken a firm stance against the misinterpretation of his critique of European colonialism, emphasizing that his views are not rooted in animosity toward European people. Known for his vocal opposition to imperialism and corruption, Kuti’s statements aim to distinguish his anti-colonial sentiment from generalized prejudice.

Speaking Out Against Colonialism, Not People

In a recent Instagram post, Seun Kuti addressed what he sees as a misunderstanding of his ideological positions. “I’m against European colonisation and imperialism, but that does not mean that I’m against European people,” he stated. Kuti’s declaration underscores his belief that colonialism and its legacies of exploitation are systemic issues rather than a reflection of individual Europeans.

The musician further highlighted the contributions of Europeans who have stood in solidarity with Nigerians and other marginalized groups in the global fight for justice. “Many Europeans have been our allies in the fight against greed and unfair systems, to make the world a fairer place for everyone. Being against colonisation does not mean being against Europeans,” Kuti explained.

    Advocating for Justice and Solidarity

Kuti’s sentiments align with his broader activism, which calls for dismantling systems of oppression and fostering global solidarity. His statement is a reminder that alliances across borders can play a crucial role in challenging injustices, including the remnants of colonial exploitation and imperialism.

While Kuti’s critique targets structures and policies born out of colonial rule, his message aims to promote unity and understanding, emphasizing the need to separate systemic criticism from individual blame.

Staying Out of the Burna Boy-Speed Darlington Drama

In addition to his comments on colonialism, Seun Kuti also addressed the ongoing feud between fellow artists Burna Boy and Speed Darlington. During a recent Instagram live session, Kuti made it clear that he has no intention of being drawn into their conflict. The feud began after Speed Darlington alleged that Burna Boy engaged in an illicit relationship with American music mogul Diddy to secure a Grammy win.

Kuti dismissed fan attempts to link him to the situation, emphasizing his neutrality. “Don’t involve me in Burna Boy & Speed Darlington’s case; because I collected a diamond from him doesn’t mean I’m his close adviser,” he remarked, referring to a gift he had received from Burna Boy. Kuti added that Diddy, the subject of Speed Darlington’s allegations, was instrumental in popularizing the latter’s music.

    Context on the Feud

Speed Darlington gained significant attention when Diddy reposted his song “Bangdadang” on social media, a gesture that helped propel Darlington to a wider audience. Kuti acknowledged this, adding, “I have done a lot of songs, and Diddy never posted any of them, but he reposted Speed Darlington’s song.”

While the feud between Burna Boy and Speed Darlington continues to generate buzz, Kuti’s decision to remain uninvolved reflects his focus on larger societal issues rather than personal rivalries.

    A Call for Constructive Dialogue

Through his statements, Seun Kuti reinforces the importance of constructive dialogue and mutual respect in addressing societal issues. His ability to differentiate between systemic critiques and individual actions serves as a model for fostering understanding in an increasingly polarized world.

As debates around colonial legacies and artistic rivalries persist, Kuti’s voice remains a powerful advocate for justice, unity, and accountability.
