Nigerian Afrobeat superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has revisited a pivotal moment in his music journey, reflecting on his first official contract and the significant role his father played in reshaping his career trajectory. The revelation came after entertainment talent manager Tosin Ashafa shared details about the contract on social media.

    Tosin Ashafa’s Revelation

Tosin Ashafa, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), opened up about the early stages of Davido’s career. According to Ashafa, Davido’s first contract was signed under Black Diamond Promotions, a venture involving Cecil Hammond and another silent partner. The team also enlisted Godwin Tom to manage the budding artist.

However, as Davido’s passion and commitment to music became evident, his father, Dr. Deji Adeleke, decided to intervene. Recognizing his son’s determination, Dr. Adeleke reached out to the management team and bought out the contract, ensuring Davido’s complete creative and financial independence.

Ashafa wrote, “I signed @davido to his 1st official contract under Black Diamond Promotions with Cecil Hammond/another silent partner. We hired @GodwinTom to manage him. Dr. Adeleke realized David was really serious with pushing his music without him, reached out to us, and bought us out.”

    Davido’s Reaction

In response to Ashafa’s post, Davido took a trip down memory lane, expressing gratitude and admiration for everyone involved during those formative years. He also highlighted his father’s foresight and support.

“Lmao I remember this day. No, I signed the contract in 2011 … was a good contract, not bad! But daddy wanted me to have 100 percent of whatever I was doing! Especially after I played him the first cut of the ‘Dami Duro’ video in his office! He knew it was game time!!!” the singer recalled.

Davido also expressed appreciation to the team behind Black Diamond Promotions for their understanding and willingness to let him pursue his path. “So much respect to you guys for allowing me to walk! Just know you were part of something that turned out to be phenomenal!” he added.

    The Turning Point: “Dami Duro”

The mention of the “Dami Duro” music video—a groundbreaking hit in Davido’s career—is a testament to the transformative impact it had on his journey. The song, which became a national anthem upon its release, solidified Davido’s place in the Nigerian music industry and marked the beginning of his meteoric rise to international fame.

    A Father’s Role in Success

Dr. Adeleke’s decision to buy out Davido’s contract underscores his belief in his son’s potential and his commitment to ensuring Davido’s long-term success. By giving Davido full control over his creative output and earnings, Dr. Adeleke paved the way for the singer to build a legacy that continues to grow.

    Fans React to the Story

The story has sparked widespread admiration and nostalgia among fans and industry insiders. Many praised Dr. Adeleke’s supportive role and Davido’s humility in acknowledging those who contributed to his journey.

One fan wrote, “Davido’s story is so inspiring. His dad believed in him and gave him the tools to succeed. This is what generational support looks like.”

Another commented, “It’s amazing to see Davido give credit where it’s due. Not many artists acknowledge the people who helped them early on.”

    Legacy and Impact

Today, Davido is one of Africa’s most successful artists, with numerous awards, chart-topping hits, and global recognition to his name. His journey from signing his first contract to becoming a household name is a testament to hard work, vision, and the power of family support.

As Davido continues to shape the Afrobeat genre and inspire the next generation of artists, his reflections on his early career serve as a powerful reminder of the importance of perseverance, gratitude, and strategic decision-making in achieving success.
