Mariah the Scientist has officially reached a career milestone. Her latest project, Hearts Sold Separately, has claimed the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s Top R&B Albums chart for the week of September 6, marking her first time leading the ranking.
Released via Buckles Laboratories/Epic Records, the album has resonated with fans across streaming and sales platforms, cementing Mariah’s rise in contemporary R&B.
Impressive Numbers Behind the Milestone
According to Luminate, Hearts Sold Separately earned 36,000 equivalent units in its debut week (Aug. 22–28). Streaming drove the bulk of the performance, with 42.3 million on-demand plays across audio and video platforms, translating to 32,000 units. Traditional album sales contributed another 4,000 units, while track-equivalent albums accounted for a minor portion.
This achievement represents a new personal best for Mariah, who previously peaked at No. 14 on the Top R&B Albums chart with her 2023 release To Be Eaten Alive.
In addition to topping the R&B chart, Hearts Sold Separately opened at No. 3 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and No. 11 on the Billboard 200, showing crossover appeal beyond the genre.

“Burning Blue” Leads the Way
The album’s success is fueled by the breakout single “Burning Blue,” which introduced Mariah to a wider audience earlier this year.
- In May, “Burning Blue” reached No. 25 on the Billboard Hot 100, marking her first Top 40 entry.
- On the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, the track landed a Top 10 spot, solidifying her status as a rising R&B star.
With the full album now out, “Burning Blue” has climbed even higher, hitting No. 2 on Hot R&B Songs and No. 3 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs this week.
Multiple Hits From Hearts Sold Separately
Hearts Sold Separately is making waves across charts beyond the lead single. Ten tracks from the album now appear on Hot R&B Songs, including:
- “Is It a Crime” featuring Kali Uchis at No. 7
- “Sacrifice” at No. 8
- “Rainy Days” at No. 10
Other standout tracks—“Like You Never,” “Eternal Flame,” and “No More Entertainers”—have also debuted strongly, demonstrating Mariah’s growing influence in the R&B scene.
Fans and critics alike have praised the album’s blend of emotional depth and sonic versatility, marking Mariah as one of R&B’s most exciting voices of 2025.
Why This No. 1 Matters
Mariah’s rise is emblematic of modern R&B’s evolution, where streaming numbers, social media buzz, and collaborations drive success. Her first No. 1 album reflects:
- Fan engagement: Streaming drove most of the album’s debut numbers.
- Strategic releases: Singles like “Burning Blue” built anticipation.
- Cultural relevance: Collaborations with artists like Kali Uchis amplify visibility.
“This album shows my growth as an artist,” Mariah told fans during a recent live chat. “Every track tells a story, and I’m grateful for everyone supporting me on this journey.”
