Clark Atlanta University on Lockdown Amid Campus Threat

Clark Atlanta University Responds to Campus Threat

Clark Atlanta University (CAU) became the latest historically Black college and university (HBCU) to confront a security scare this week, sparking fears across campuses nationwide.

On Thursday, September 12, 2025, the university issued a shelter-in-place order as a precautionary measure to safeguard students, faculty, and staff. Administrators confirmed the lockdown but provided no specifics about the nature of the threat.

“We are currently addressing a situation on campus that requires a shelter-in-place notice,” the statement read.
“Our priority is the safety of all students, faculty, and staff.”

No injuries were reported, and law enforcement had not announced any arrests at the time.

    Students Describe Chaos and Fear

The response was immediate and intense. Atlanta police, campus security, and SWAT teams swept the campus as helicopters circled overhead, creating a surreal scene for students.

    One student shared their experience:

“I was in class, being a scholar like I usually am. Then I get an email saying shelter in place, I’m like, what?”

Another student described the anxiety sparked by the alert:

“I have really bad anxiety, so I started shaking. I got scared. I called my mom and my daddy, everybody.”

    Ripple Effects Across Nearby Campuses

The threat extended concern beyond CAU. Spelman College tightened security at its two main entrances and advised students to remain indoors. Morris Brown College also issued a shelter-in-place notice.

Spelman later confirmed via Instagram that several HBCUs had received threats, though none directly targeted their campus.

Similar lockdowns were reported in other states, including:

    • Southern University, Louisiana
    • Alabama State University, Alabama
    • Hampton University, Virginia
    • Virginia State University, Virginia

A Pattern of Threats Against HBCUs

These incidents echo a troubling history. In 2022, over 50 HBCUs and roughly 20 predominantly Black institutions received bomb threats, often delivered via phone calls or social media. In response, the FBI and Department of Homeland Security invested millions to bolster campus security and improve emergency protocols.

For students at Clark Atlanta, the scare is a stark reminder of the precarious environment HBCUs sometimes face.

“There’s been a lot of HBCUs under threat recently, and it just happens to be that one of them is Clark Atlanta,” one student said.
“First of all, none of them should be under threat anytime.”

    The Aftermath

While Thursday’s alert ultimately proved unfounded, the experience left a lasting impression. Students recalled helicopters, SWAT teams, and the tense uncertainty, emphasizing the emotional toll even a precautionary threat can inflict.

The latest incident highlights ongoing concerns for HBCU safety and the importance of vigilant security measures nationwide.
