Miami (OH) Fans Storm Court in Speedos During March Madness Win

March Madness always delivers unforgettable moments — but few are quite like this. During Miami (Ohio)’s First Four matchup against SMU, a routine free-throw attempt turned into a viral spectacle, as a group of RedHawks fans in Speedos, swim caps, and goggles stormed the aisle behind the basket.

What looked like chaos was actually part of a well-established tradition.

Swim Team Fans Make Their Mark

Since late January, Miami’s men’s swimming and diving team has been attending RedHawks games in this unusual attire, creating one of college basketball’s most bizarre — and surprisingly effective — home-court advantages. The fan club made its debut on Jan. 27 during a tight win over UMass and has been a staple ever since.

At Dayton’s First Four, they brought the act to the national stage, catching SMU’s Corey Washington completely off guard. Washington missed his first free throw as the arena erupted in laughter and chaos — though he made the second, the energy had already swung in Miami’s favor.

    RedHawks Ride the Speedo Wave

The RedHawks capitalized on the momentum, pulling off a decisive 89-79 victory in what felt like a home game just 40 miles from campus.

Forward Antwone Woolfolk was floored by the fan section’s antics:

“What really surprised me was the swim team, when they came out. That was elite.”

The Speedo-clad fans have become a defining part of Miami’s identity, helping the team punch above its weight in the NCAA Tournament.

From Underdogs to March Madness Contenders

Despite a stellar 31-1 record, Miami entered the tournament with skepticism due to a weak schedule and no power-conference games. The selection committee barely let them in and placed them in the First Four.

But with a red-heavy crowd, 16 three-pointers, and a wall of disruptive Speedos, the RedHawks looked anything but fringe.

Head coach Travis Steele wasn’t mincing words:

“This wasn’t an upset tonight, at all.”

Now, the rest of the country is getting introduced not just to Miami’s basketball resume, but to its eccentric, unstoppable fan section.

    What’s Next?

Up next for the RedHawks: Tennessee.

If Miami’s March Madness run continues, don’t expect the Speedos to disappear. The quirky tradition is officially part of the team’s identity — and a new viral hallmark for college basketball.

Stay tuned for more March Madness chaos, viral fan moments, and unforgettable NCAA action!
