Ugandan singer Shakira Shakiraa has fired back at Phina Mugerwa Masanyalaze, the Vice Chairperson of the Uganda National Cultural Centre (UNCC), over allegations of promoting nudity and obscenity in her performances. The controversy stems from Phina’s recent remarks targeting female musicians for their bold fashion choices and provocative stage acts.

During an announcement about the UNCC’s decision to shadow-ban vulgar songs by artists like Gravity Omutujju and Lil Pazo, Phina also pointed fingers at female performers, including Shakira Shakiraa, Gloria Bugie, and Ritah Dancehall. She accused them of engaging in performances that undermine cultural values.

Unfazed by the criticism, Shakira dismissed Phina’s accusations, suggesting that her remarks are fueled by jealousy of the current generation of confident and successful female artists.
“I think she’s just jealous of the young, sexy, and beautiful musicians. When I decided to pay attention to her accusations, I realized she wasn’t as holy as she claims to be,” Shakira stated.
The singer argued that Phina lacks the moral authority to criticize others, citing her own career history as a former artist who adopted provocative dances and revealing outfits.
“She idolized Colombian singer Shakira—her dances, dress code, and lifestyle weren’t plausible either. The difference is that Ugandans have embraced us now, and we are earning, unlike her,” Shakira added.
