A disturbing incident during a high school track and field championship has prompted law enforcement to launch an investigation. Last week, at the VHSL Class 3 State Indoor Championship, Brookville High School junior Kaelen Tucker was struck in the back of the head with a baton during the 4×200 relay race. The blow left Tucker with a concussion and a possible skull fracture, prompting the involvement of police.
The Incident
Tucker was participating in the highly competitive relay race when I.C. Norcom senior Alaila Everett inadvertently struck her with the baton. According to Everett, the incident was not intentional. She explained that after a few attempts to hand off the baton, it got caught behind Tucker’s back and rolled up her back. In the process, Everett lost her balance, resulting in the baton striking Tucker.
Despite Everett’s claims of an accident, the consequences were severe, and Tucker’s injury has left her uncertain for future competitions, including the upcoming Nationals event. Tucker’s father, Keith, confirmed that the family had filed a protective order against Everett to prevent any potential future interaction between the two competitors, though Tucker’s participation in future events is still under consideration.
Official Response and Disqualification
Following the incident, I.C. Norcom was disqualified from the event due to Everett’s actions, but the situation has left many questioning the safety measures in high school athletics. Everett has reached out to Tucker to apologize for the accident, but Tucker has reportedly blocked her on social media.
As the police investigation continues, the future of both athletes’ involvement in upcoming events remains uncertain, but the case has sparked discussions on the need for stronger protections and oversight in competitive sports. The Tucker family’s decision to file a protective order highlights the gravity of the incident and their concern for their daughter’s safety moving forward.
The investigation into the baton attack is ongoing, and law enforcement will determine whether further actions are necessary.
