Suge Knight does not want any part of the courtroom battle over Tupac Shakur’s murder.
The former Death Row Records boss has warned that he will not cooperate with either side if he is compelled to testify in the case against Duane “Keefe D” Davis, whose trial is now moving forward in Nevada.
Knight was driving the vehicle when Tupac was fatally shot in Las Vegas in 1996, making him a significant potential witness nearly three decades later.
But Knight says forcing him onto the witness stand would not necessarily benefit either side.
His message to the lawyers is blunt: leave him out of it.
Suge Knight is making his position clear ahead of the trial of Duane “Keefe D” Davis in connection with Tupac Shakur’s 1996 killing.
Knight told ABC that he does not intend to help either prosecutors or Davis’s defense if he is subpoenaed to testify.
“They make me come there against my will,” Knight said. “If Keefe D’s lawyers bring me there, it don’t look good for him. If the prosecution brings me there, it don’t look good for them. Leave me out of it.”
Knight was driving the BMW carrying Tupac when the rapper was fatally shot during a drive-by shooting on the Las Vegas Strip in September 1996.
That makes Knight one of the most significant surviving people who was inside the vehicle targeted in the attack.
Yet the former music executive says he has no interest in becoming a witness against Davis.
Knight framed his position around loyalty and his personal opposition to testifying against another person.
He went as far as comparing giving testimony against someone to physical violence.
“To actually get on the stand, and point somebody out, it’s worse than taking a gun and shooting that man in the head,” Knight said.
Knight is currently serving a 28-year prison sentence stemming from an unrelated 2015 voluntary manslaughter conviction.
Despite his refusal to cooperate, Knight has continued speaking publicly about the case.
He also suggested that Davis has already provided prosecutors with significant material through his own public statements over the years.
Davis has discussed the events surrounding Tupac’s killing in media appearances and in his 2019 memoir, material prosecutors reportedly intend to use as evidence.
Knight echoed the idea that Davis’s public comments could be damaging to his own defense, saying Davis has “already told on himself.”
Davis has pleaded not guilty to the murder charge.
The prosecution alleges that Davis orchestrated the attack and supplied the firearm used in the shooting, although prosecutors do not allege that he personally fired the weapon.
As jury selection continues, the question of whether Knight will ultimately be required to appear in court remains unresolved.
Tupac Shakur was fatally shot in Las Vegas in September 1996 after attending a Mike Tyson boxing match with Knight.
The shooting became one of the most enduring unsolved mysteries in hip-hop history.
For decades, the case remained without a murder prosecution.
That changed when Davis was charged in connection with Tupac’s death.
Davis has acknowledged being present during the events surrounding the shooting and has discussed the night publicly over the years.
Prosecutors now intend to use some of those statements as part of their case.
Knight’s role is particularly significant because he was in the car with Tupac when the shooting occurred.
However, his willingness to cooperate has remained a major question.
His latest comments suggest that, if the court compels him to testify, he does not intend to voluntarily assist either side.
Knight’s potential testimony could carry considerable weight because of his position inside the vehicle during the shooting.
But his latest remarks introduce another layer of uncertainty into a case that has already taken nearly 30 years to reach trial.
Whether Knight actually takes the stand will ultimately depend on the court and any legal orders requiring his appearance.
If he is called, his stated unwillingness to cooperate could create a difficult situation for both sides.
At the same time, prosecutors already have other evidence they say connects Davis to the killing, including his own past public statements.
That means Knight’s testimony is potentially important, but it is not the only evidence expected to shape the case.
Knight’s refusal to testify is rooted in what he describes as a personal code.
