D4vd’s murder case has taken a major legal turn after his private defense team withdrew and a Los Angeles County public defender was appointed to represent the singer.
D4vd pleaded not guilty Monday and is expected back in court October 19. The change in representation came after a judge determined the 21-year-old qualified for appointed counsel.
Attorneys Blair Berk, Marilyn Bednarski and Regina Peter asked the court to withdraw from the case. The judge granted their request and appointed the Los Angeles County Public Defender’s Office.
The lawyers did not publicly explain why they could no longer represent D4vd. In a statement, however, they emphasized that their departure was not a loss of confidence in their client.
“This morning the court granted our request to withdraw as counsel and appointed the Los Angeles County Public Defender’s Office, after it was determined David qualified for appointed counsel,” the attorneys said.
They added that they continue to support D4vd’s defense and expressed confidence in the team now handling the case.
The appointment has drawn attention because D4vd reportedly earned at least $11 million from his Interscope Records deal. It is unclear how much of that money remains available to him or why he now qualifies for publicly funded representation.
There have also been few public indications of an extravagant lifestyle. D4vd had reportedly been living in a rental home, and there have been no widely reported signs of unusually lavish spending.
That leaves a significant financial question hanging over the case, but the available information does not establish how D4vd’s financial situation changed or why he became eligible for a public defender.
Meanwhile, Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman addressed reporters after the hearing and said the death penalty remains on the table. Prosecutors, however, have not decided whether they will pursue it.
Hochman also addressed the change in D4vd’s legal team, saying he expects the public defender to provide the singer with “zealous” representation as the prosecution moves forward.
The attorney switch could ultimately affect the timeline of the case, although no trial date has been set. For now, the Los Angeles County Public Defender’s Office is taking over D4vd’s defense as the murder prosecution enters its next phase.
