Justin Timberlake is reportedly preparing to revisit some of the biggest controversies of his career in a new four-part docuseries for Apple TV, with Janet Jackson allegedly set to appear and discuss the fallout from their infamous 2004 Super Bowl halftime performance.
The reported project is expected to explore Timberlake’s personal life, professional journey and the public controversies that have followed him over the past two decades.
According to sources familiar with the production, filmmaker Fisher Stevens is directing the series, which could premiere in December. Neither Timberlake nor Apple TV has officially confirmed the project.
Janet Jackson Reportedly Set to Revisit 2004 Super Bowl Controversy
One of the documentary’s most significant subjects is expected to be the 2004 Super Bowl XXXVIII halftime performance involving Timberlake and Jackson.
The performance became one of the most controversial moments in live television history after Timberlake exposed part of Jackson’s breast during the closing moments of their performance.
The incident, widely described as a wardrobe malfunction, triggered intense public scrutiny and had lasting consequences for Jackson’s career and public image.
Timberlake’s solo career, meanwhile, continued to flourish.
Jackson is reportedly expected to offer her perspective on the incident and explain how the controversy affected her legacy. Her participation could provide an opportunity to revisit an episode that has continued to generate debate about the different treatment the two performers received.
Britney Spears’ Revelations Could Also Feature
The reported documentary is also expected to examine Timberlake’s relationship with former girlfriend Britney Spears.
In her 2023 memoir, The Woman in Me, Spears shared personal details about their relationship during the early 2000s, including revelations that attracted widespread attention.
The renewed scrutiny prompted Timberlake to publicly apologise to both Spears and Jackson in 2021, as criticism surrounding his past treatment of the two women resurfaced.
The docuseries is reportedly expected to address those controversies and their impact on his public image.
Timberlake’s Health and Legal Troubles
Beyond his relationships and career controversies, the project is also said to explore Timberlake’s more recent personal challenges.
The singer completed his Forget Tomorrow world tour in support of his 2024 album, Everything I Thought It Was.
The tour period also brought legal and health-related headlines.
In 2024, Timberlake was arrested in Sag Harbor, New York, on a driving while intoxicated charge. He later pleaded guilty to a reduced traffic offence under a plea agreement.
In July 2025, he publicly revealed that he had been diagnosed with Lyme disease, describing the condition as “relentlessly debilitating.”
He said the diagnosis helped explain some of the difficulties he experienced while performing during the tour.
Apple TV Has Yet to Confirm the Project
Timberlake’s reported documentary comes as he navigates renewed public discussion about his past and the personal challenges he has experienced in recent years.
If the project moves forward as described, it could give viewers a closer look at the events that have shaped his career and the controversies that continue to follow him.
However, representatives for Timberlake, Jackson and Apple have not officially confirmed the production, its reported December premiere or the participation of the artists mentioned.
For now, the four-part docuseries remains a reported project rather than an officially announced Apple TV release.
