Veteran Ugandan musician Kabuye Semboga has issued a stern warning to artists who duplicate his music without permission, vowing to take legal action now that the copyright law management system is about to be amended and enforced.
During a recent press conference, Semboga expressed his frustration with artists who re-record his songs and play them on radio and TV without his consent. “The good thing, the copyright management system is about to be implemented so I will squeeze anyone who redid my music without permission,” he stated.
Semboga pointed out that he was particularly hurt by the unauthorized remake of his popular song Kangume by fellow artist Mayanja, making it clear that he was not pleased with the infringement on his creative work. He also hinted that he will be pursuing legal action against those involved in such acts in the near future.
While discussing the challenges facing the music industry, Semboga also took the opportunity to criticize the current generation of artists for their inappropriate and often explicit song lyrics. He believes that such content has dragged the music industry down, urging his fellow artists to focus on creating clean and educative songs that can stand the test of time.
“I urge the new generation of artists to be more creative and develop songs that are not only entertaining but also educational. We need music that can last long in the market and contribute positively to society,” he added.
