A devastating aviation disaster rocked India early Thursday as Air India Flight 171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner bound for London, crashed just moments after takeoff from Ahmedabad — erupting into a fireball that claimed 241 lives, including several students on the ground.

Caught on Video: Jet Bursts Into Flames Over College

Video of the crash shows the aircraft struggling to gain altitude after departure before plunging into the B.J. Medical College campus, triggering a massive explosion and sending plumes of smoke across the city. The scene was described as catastrophic, with debris scattered across Ahmedabad and multiple buildings damaged.

Only One Survivor Reported — Man in Seat 11A

In a rare miracle, one person is believed to have survived the crash. According to BBC News, Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, a British national seated in 11A, was pulled from the wreckage alive and taken to a hospital. Ramesh told reporters that just 30 seconds after takeoff, he heard a loud noise, followed by the sudden descent.

Engine Trouble Suspected — “Mayday” Call Issued

While the official cause of the crash has yet to be confirmed, preliminary reports suggest engine failure. A “Mayday” distress call was reportedly issued seconds after takeoff, indicating mechanical problems almost immediately. Investigators are now combing through black box data and wreckage to piece together what went wrong.

Onboard & On the Ground: Casualties Mount

The plane was carrying 242 people, including crew and passengers. Sadly, at least 5 students on the ground at the medical college also lost their lives, adding to the death toll. Families and first responders rushed to the site in a scene described as both chaotic and heartbreaking.

Boeing Under Global Scrutiny — Again

This latest disaster is yet another blow to Boeing, which has faced intense scrutiny throughout 2024 and 2025 for a string of safety failures:

  • In May, an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 lost a door plug midair
  • A Boeing 767 landing gear failed in a near-crash situation
  • Several other incidents have plagued the aerospace giant, leading to global safety concerns

Boeing released a statement saying it is in contact with Air India and is ready to provide support, adding:

“Our thoughts are with the passengers, crew, first responders, and all affected by this tragedy.”

What’s Next?

With families mourning and a survivor’s story still unfolding, India’s aviation authorities have launched a full investigation, and Boeing will likely face renewed regulatory pressure. For now, the nation — and the world — grieves the loss of 241 souls aboard Flight 171.
