Dwyane Wade Opens Up About Cancer Diagnosis and Why He Chose His Dad to Be By His Side in Surgery

NBA legend Dwyane Wade has opened up about a deeply personal chapter of his life — his battle with cancer and the emotional moments surrounding his surgery. During a heartfelt conversation on Hoda Kotb’s Making Space podcast, the three-time NBA champion revealed how stunned he was by the diagnosis and why, in his most vulnerable moment, he turned to the man who’s been there from the start — his father, Dwyane Wade Sr.

    “I Needed My Dad”

While many expected his wife Gabrielle Union to be by his side during surgery, Wade made a powerful and emotional choice. He asked for his father to be the last person he saw before being wheeled into the operating room.

“I chose my dad. He’s the guy for me. He’s always been,” Wade said. “It’s crazy because I’m a mama’s boy and all those things, but my dad has been there.”

Although Union was present at the hospital and stood by Wade throughout the ordeal, the former Miami Heat star explained why his father was the one he needed in that exact moment.

“I just thought about who I wanted to see in my most vulnerable state,” he said. “When I was probably as scared as I’ve ever been, I wanted my dad to be there. I wanted my wife to be the first person I saw when I woke up, but before going under, I was like, ‘I need my dad.’”

A Bond Strengthened by Shared Struggles

Wade also shared that his father’s own experience with prostate cancer played a huge role in how they connected more deeply. The two began to talk openly about their health, forming a unique bond built on vulnerability and mutual support.

“My dad shared with me when he was going through prostate cancer, and I think we got closer through that process,” Wade revealed. “We started being able to share personal things. Like, I’d call him after leaving the hospital, like, ‘Yo, I just got a prostate exam, Pops,’ and he’d laugh and say, ‘Oh yeah, that’s nothing.’”

Their candid conversations, sometimes humorous, sometimes raw, allowed them to grow even closer as father and son — especially during a time when Wade was navigating the unknown territory of his own diagnosis.

    Prioritizing Health and Family

Wade’s story is not just one of physical survival, but also of emotional strength, generational connection, and the importance of prioritizing health. The Hall of Famer, known for his resilience on the court, now opens up a new chapter off the court — one that’s just as powerful and deeply human.

As he continues to heal and reflect, Wade’s openness offers inspiration to others to lean into their support systems, take their health seriously, and never be afraid to show vulnerability — even for someone who spent his career being the strongest man on the court.
