Alijah Arenas, the highly ranked high school basketball phenom and son of former NBA All-Star Gilbert Arenas, has been discharged from the hospital following a terrifying Tesla Cybertruck crash in Los Angeles last week, TMZ Sports reports.
The accident, which occurred early Thursday morning on April 24, left the 16-year-old future USC Trojans star in a medically induced coma after his Cybertruck reportedly struck a tree and a fire hydrant around 5 a.m.
Following his release, the Arenas and Govan family issued a heartfelt statement confirming Alijah is “now resting comfortably under close watch.” The statement also stressed that while his road to recovery is just beginning, his spirit remains strong and he is “surrounded by love and support.”
“We are grateful to share that Alijah Arenas has been released from the hospital and is now resting comfortably under close watch,” the statement read. “While his journey to full recovery is just beginning, his spirit remains strong, and he is surrounded by love and support.”
“The Govan and Arenas family are preparing for the road ahead with faith and determination, committed to nurturing Alijah back to 100%. He remains blessed, resilient, and in high spirits.”
Update Shared on Gilbert Arenas’ Podcast
News of his pending release was first shared by Josiah Johnson, co-host of “Gil’s Arena,” the podcast hosted by Gilbert Arenas.
“Happy to announce that Alijah’s doing much better,” Johnson said. “Walking, talking, progressing very well, should be released from the hospital very soon.”
As of now, authorities have not disclosed the official cause of the crash.
Alijah’s Basketball Future Still Bright
Alijah, regarded as one of the top basketball prospects in the nation, is currently ranked No. 4 overall and the No. 1 shooting guard in the Class of 2026. In January, he committed to USC and has since requested to reclassify to the class of 2025, accelerating his path to the college level.
Despite the crash, sources close to the family remain optimistic that his recovery will be complete and he’ll return to the court when the time is right.
