Big Sean’s Fatherhood Journey: Lessons in Legacy and Healing
Big Sean is embracing fatherhood with profound introspection and valuable lessons about life, legacy, and self-improvement. Since welcoming his son, Noah, with Jhene Aiko in 2022, the Detroit rapper has been reflecting on the transformative power of parenthood.
In a recent appearance on On Purpose with Jay Shetty, Big Sean opened up about the life-changing insights he’s gained from his journey as a father.
“Fatherhood Feels Like Time Traveling”
Describing his experience, Sean likened fatherhood to “time traveling.”
“People always try and figure out how to preserve themselves. There’s the expression, ‘Oh, I’m living through my kids,’” Sean explained. “I think that your blood, your lineage…you really do time travel.”
Sean also reflected on his resemblance to his paternal grandfather, who passed away when he was a child.
“I never even met him,” Sean said. “But he’s a part of me too, and I think that’s also why it’s important to work on yourself and to heal certain traumatic experiences because, with all this information we pass on, you also pass on the good and the bad.”
Breaking Generational Cycles
During the interview, Big Sean emphasized the importance of self-healing to ensure the best for the next generation.
“It is really important to work on yourself physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually because you pass on all of that,” he shared.
When asked by Shetty what he wouldn’t want to pass on to his son, Sean answered, “Worry.”
“I used to…create all of these scenarios in my head, and I think that’s like a double-edged sword—when you have an imagination. You’re creative, you create, right? So, you can create good, you could create bad.”
Sean’s openness about breaking cycles of negativity highlights his commitment to being a present and mindful father.
Redefining Success and Purpose
In addition to sharing insights about fatherhood, Big Sean reflected on the true meaning of success.
“One of the things about success is you have to define what your idea of success is. Say somebody had a billion dollars. I wouldn’t say that he’s more successful than me,” Sean explained. “I would just say he has more money than me.”
He emphasized the importance of separating material wealth from personal fulfillment, adding, “Success to me is a feeling, it’s an emotion. It’s something that when your purpose is activated and you are impacting people in any way, shape, or form, there’s so many ways to impact people.”
A Commitment to Growth
Big Sean’s reflections showcase his dedication to growth, both as an individual and as a father. His journey underscores the importance of healing generational trauma, redefining success, and being intentional in passing on positive values to the next generation.
With his son Noah as his source of inspiration, Sean continues to evolve, blending his roles as a father, artist, and advocate for mental and emotional well-being.
