Former NFL punter Chris Kluwe’s passionate outburst against MAGA during a Huntington Beach city council meeting has cost him more than just a few hours behind bars—it’s also resulted in his firing from his high school coaching job.
Kluwe, who had been coaching the Edison High School football team since 2019, revealed he received termination papers on Wednesday, just days after being arrested and charged with disturbance of an assembly. The protest, in which Kluwe criticized MAGA policies, came during a heated council meeting in Huntington Beach, California.
Firing and Fallout: Kluwe Speaks Out
“I’m bummed that I won’t get to work with the kids anymore, because they always got excited when they figured out I played in the NFL,” Kluwe told TMZ Sports on Friday, reflecting on the loss. “But I think this exemplifies what MAGA is all about—they don’t care about harming the community as long as they can make themselves look good. It’s happening here in HB, and it’s happening nationally across our country.”
While Kluwe expressed disappointment over the termination, he also received some support from at least one parent who reached out to express displeasure over the firing. However, the coach remained firm in his stance, emphasizing his commitment to advocating for causes he believes in.
A Future in Coaching or Politics?
As for his future in coaching, Kluwe remains uncertain. He had always aimed to coach at a higher level and had planned to continue coaching until his children finished school. Now, with his current job lost, he plans to take time off to continue his advocacy work—something he has always been passionate about.
Last week, Kluwe revealed that members of the Democratic Party had approached him, encouraging him to consider running for political office. While he admitted that politics wasn’t something he had initially planned on pursuing, he mentioned he would be open to the idea if it meant he could make a positive impact on the country.
Kluwe’s No Regrets
Despite the backlash, Kluwe stood by his actions. “No regrets,” he told TMZ Sports in a follow-up interview. While his future remains uncertain, his commitment to speaking out and advocating for his beliefs is unwavering.
