Comedian Paul Rodriguez was recently arrested in Burbank for alleged possession of narcotics, but he maintains the drugs were not his and is accusing the police of racial bias and excessive force during the incident.
According to TMZ, the arrest occurred on Friday when the car Rodriguez was in was pulled over for a traffic violation. The authorities allegedly found narcotics during the stop, leading to Rodriguez’s arrest on a misdemeanor possession charge.
Rodriguez, known for his long and successful comedy career, claims the situation was mishandled by the officers involved. He alleges that while he was sleeping in the passenger seat of his own vehicle, a “Caucasian” officer forcefully slapped him awake, which he describes as unnecessary and racially motivated.
The comedian asserts the drugs did not belong to him, but rather to his female friend who was driving at the time. Rodriguez claims that she even admitted to police that the narcotics were hers. Despite this, Rodriguez says he was allegedly “roughed up” by the officers and arrested alongside his friend. His vehicle was also impounded following the incident.
The Burbank Police Department confirmed to TMZ that Rodriguez was cited and released for misdemeanor drug possession, with the case being forwarded to the city attorney for possible charges. Meanwhile, Rodriguez’s friend is reportedly being held due to outstanding warrants.
Police have not publicly addressed Rodriguez’s allegations of excessive force or racial motivation. However, the comedian is reportedly considering filing a formal complaint against the officers involved.
Rodriguez has expressed frustration with the handling of the situation, emphasizing that he feels he was unfairly targeted. Body cam footage from the officers may provide further clarity on what transpired during the arrest.
The outcome of the case remains uncertain as the matter is now in the hands of the city attorney.
