David Johansen, the legendary frontman of the New York Dolls and the actor best known for playing the Ghost of Christmas Past in Scrooged, has passed away at 75.

Johansen died Friday at his New York home, as confirmed by his stepdaughter Leah Hennessey to multiple media outlets.

A Rock Icon’s Battle with Illness

The rock icon, known for his gritty vocals and flamboyant stage presence, revealed last month that he had been diagnosed with stage four cancer, a brain tumor, and a broken back. However, his official cause of death has not been announced.

From Proto-Punk to Buster Poindexter

Johansen joined the New York Dolls in 1971, helping pioneer the proto-punk movement with their gender-bending style and raw sound. After the band’s breakup in 1976, he reinvented himself as Buster Poindexter, a lounge singer alter ego, scoring a hit with the song “Hot Hot Hot.”

In 2004, Johansen reunited with surviving New York Dolls members Sylvain Sylvain and Arthur Kane, releasing three new albums and touring.

Beyond Music: A Hollywood Legacy

Johansen also made his mark in Hollywood, most famously starring as the Ghost of Christmas Past in Bill Murray’s 1988 holiday classic, Scrooged. His raspy-voiced cab driver character remains a fan favorite.
