In a surprise turn of events, New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr is stepping away from the NFL at the age of 34, citing a serious shoulder injury as the driving force behind his decision. The four-time Pro Bowl quarterback, who spent the majority of his career with the Oakland and Las Vegas Raiders, confirmed his retirement on Saturday, marking the end of a standout 11-year career.

Carr, who has been a staple in the NFL since being drafted in the second round of the 2014 draft, explained that after reflecting and praying with his wife, Heather, he realized it was time to move on from the sport he loves.

Carr’s Difficult Decision and Grateful Farewell to Fans

In an emotional statement released by the New Orleans Saints, Carr expressed his gratitude for his incredible journey in the league. “For more than 11 years, we have been incredibly blessed, and we are forever grateful and humbled by this experience,” he wrote, acknowledging the support of his teammates, coaches, management, and especially the fans who made his career so special.

The decision was not an easy one, with Carr admitting that he struggled to find the right words to express his appreciation for the people who helped shape his career.

The Injury That Led to Retirement: Labral Tear and Rotator Cuff Damage

According to the Saints, Carr began experiencing intense pain in his right shoulder while preparing for the 2025 NFL season. This came just after he had returned to throwing hard following a hand injury and concussion on December 8th. Scans on the shoulder revealed a labral tear and significant degenerative changes to his rotator cuff, conditions that would require extensive rehabilitation.

While surgery was an option, the Saints confirmed that it would have meant sitting out the entire 2025 season. Even with the procedure, there were no guarantees that Carr would fully recover or return to playing at his previous level.

    Carr’s Faith-Fueled Decision

Carr opened up about the personal nature of his retirement in a recent church service, using the opportunity to reflect on how his faith in God’s word has guided him throughout this difficult time. Speaking candidly about his injury, Carr emphasized that external opinions no longer held weight in his life, and only God’s guidance mattered. This spiritual perspective provided clarity as he made his choice to step away from the game.

A Look Back at Carr’s Impressive Career

Derek Carr’s NFL career comes to a close with an impressive career stat line of over 41,200 passing yards, 257 touchdowns, and 112 interceptions. Known for his leadership on the field, Carr leaves behind a legacy as one of the most consistent and respected quarterbacks of his era. Throughout his career, he overcame multiple challenges, including injuries, to remain a prominent figure in the league.

Carr also follows in the footsteps of his older brother, David Carr, who also played quarterback in the NFL, adding another chapter to the Carr family’s football legacy.

    The Legacy of Derek Carr

Though Carr’s time in the NFL was cut short by injury, his impact on the game, particularly in Las Vegas, will be remembered for years to come. His ability to consistently put up big numbers and lead his team, even in difficult situations, has earned him respect from teammates and opponents alike. Carr’s story is a testament to resilience, faith, and the power of making difficult decisions in pursuit of what’s best for oneself and one’s family.

While his retirement leaves a void in the NFL, Carr’s influence on the game will live on through his achievements, his leadership, and his faith-driven approach to life.

Derek Carr’s announcement has sent shockwaves through the NFL community, but his legacy will endure. As Carr moves on from the sport, he’s made it clear that his health and faith are his top priorities — and fans everywhere are wishing him nothing but the best as he embarks on the next chapter of his life.

Stay tuned as more details unfold on this monumental change in the world of professional football.
