Doja Cat is entering a new chapter—one that’s more confident, experimental, and personal than ever before.
In a candid sit-down with CBS News Sunday Morning, the Grammy-winning hitmaker opened up about the journey leading to her upcoming fifth studio album, Vie, set to drop Friday, Sept. 26.
Despite her chart-topping singles and global fame, Doja admitted she struggled with moments of deep self-doubt in recent years.
“I’m very proud of the music I’m making now,” she told CBS host Michelle Miller. “I’m very excited because it’s things I wasn’t able to do before.”
Doja Cat on Finding Her True Voice
Known for her fearless stage presence and viral pop-rap hits, Doja Cat revealed that her growth as a vocalist has been a game-changer.
She explained that she used to joke about not being able to “hit certain riffs or runs” and even pretended her limitations didn’t bother her.
“I used to joke about that….I used to pretend to [sing],” she admitted. “And then I just sucked it up and stopped joking so much and took myself more seriously.”
That shift in mindset, combined with practice and maturity, now fuels the confidence she brings to Vie.
The Meaning Behind Vie
Back in July, Doja shocked fans by announcing the project on Instagram with a playful French tease:
“Je sais que tu es ma vie 🥖 Vie out 9/26.”
(Translation: “I know you are my life.”)
The announcement immediately sparked theories online about whether Doja was signaling a more European-inspired, avant-garde direction. While she hasn’t spilled all the details, she’s made it clear that Vie represents a more authentic version of herself.
Looking Back: The Scarlet Era
Doja Cat has never been afraid to be brutally honest about her art. Reflecting on her 2023 album Scarlet, she bluntly described it as “a massive fart” in an interview with The New York Times.
“Not to diminish it, but it was a bit of like, I just need to get this out,” she said.
She explained that Scarlet was a purge—an attempt to experiment with raw emotions like anger, sadness, and frustration. While it gave her some catharsis, it ultimately didn’t capture the full scope of what she wanted to create.
“I enjoyed performing it onstage,” she continued, “but it didn’t get me all the way there.”

Doja Cat’s Return to Form
Now, with Vie, Doja says she’s returning to what she knows best—genre-bending, fearless, and unapologetically Doja.
From her early breakout with Hot Pink (2019) to the globe-dominating Planet Her (2021), Doja Cat has cemented herself as a force across pop, rap, and R&B. But this time, she promises fans something deeper and more refined.
“I thought fixing that would entail making music that was more visceral or more emotional,” she explained. “These days, I’m ready to return.”
What Fans Can Expect
- A more vocally ambitious Doja—showcasing new runs and riffs.
- Lyrics that lean into raw emotion and personal reflection.
- Theatrical visuals and performances to match her bolder sound.

As the countdown to Vie continues, fans are already buzzing online about what could be Doja Cat’s most defining era yet.
