In honor of Black History Month, Google is spotlighting Black developers, creatives, and businesses, including a tribute to the legendary late rapper and producer J Dilla.
The tech giant released a Google Doodle titled “The Art of Hip-Hop Beat Making”, featuring an animated short that celebrates the innovative craft of hip-hop production. The video combines music from Illa J, J Dilla’s younger brother, with some of Dilla’s own iconic beats.
The animation shows a caricature of J Dilla in the studio, headphones around his neck, tinkering with a drum machine, piano, and other instruments to craft the perfect track.
According to Google, the doodle aims to “highlight how hip-hop producers have innovated techniques for mixing and looping sound,” showcasing the creativity and technical skill that defined Dilla’s work.
J Dilla: Detroit’s Hip-Hop Architect
Born James Dewitt Yancey, J Dilla is regarded as one of hip-hop’s most influential producers, helping shape the Detroit underground music scene. He was also a founding member of the Soulquarians, a collective known for redefining soul and hip-hop in the late ’90s and early 2000s.
Though his life was tragically cut short at just 32 due to complications from Lupus, Dilla’s legacy continues to influence producers and artists worldwide. His innovative approach to sampling, looping, and beat-making remains a benchmark in hip-hop production.
