Kanye West’s much-anticipated third-person documentary “In Whose Name?” officially hit theaters today, and it’s already stirring controversy. The film, which traces Ye’s chaotic journey from 2018 to 2024, puts his most volcanic moments front and center—including an explosive confrontation with former mother-in-law Kris Jenner and a tense backstage clash at Saturday Night Live over his MAGA hat moment.
The Kris Jenner Meltdown
In one of the most jarring clips, Ye is seen in a heated shouting match with Kris Jenner. The scene reportedly stems from tensions around his 2016 hospitalization, when Ye felt his public image had taken a massive hit.
When Kris attempted to calm him down by insisting public perception didn’t matter, Kanye erupted—repeatedly screaming, “It does matter!” directly at her. The footage captures a raw, unfiltered Ye clashing with the matriarch of the Kardashian-Jenner empire, highlighting how strained the family dynamic became behind closed doors.
The MAGA Hat and SNL Showdown
The documentary also revisits Kanye’s infamous 2018 SNL appearance, where he took the stage proudly wearing a red Donald Trump MAGA hat.
On camera, Ye says he was “bullied” for his decision, but the film shows what happened when the cameras stopped rolling. Michael Che, longtime cast member and “Weekend Update” cohost, confronted Kanye backstage, telling him he was “foul” for blindsiding the cast in the final moments of the live show.
Che admitted that as someone who once saw Kanye as a “superhero for the Black community,” he was deeply disappointed. Tensions ran so high that Ye’s close collaborator Consequence had to step in and break up the confrontation.

Emotional Return to Chicago
Not all of the footage centers on conflict. Filmmaker Nico Ballesteros, who was granted all-access to Ye’s world, also captured more intimate moments. Among them: Ye’s emotional return to his childhood home in Chicago in 2021.
The scene is a rare glimpse of vulnerability, contrasting sharply with his fiery public persona.
Nothing Left Out
“In Whose Name?” doesn’t shy away from controversy. The film reportedly includes Ye’s antisemitic rants, his rollercoaster Donda album rollouts, and raw moments of self-reflection. It’s a portrait of a man constantly at war—with the media, with his family, and often with himself.
Why This Doc Matters
Love him or hate him, Kanye West has shaped modern music and pop culture for over two decades. This documentary lays bare the messy intersections of celebrity, politics, and family drama that defined his post-2016 era.
For fans, it’s a chance to see Ye uncut and unfiltered. For critics, it’s likely to spark fresh debates about accountability, artistry, and the dangers of platforming controversy.
