Lil Jon’s signature sunglasses have been part of his image for decades, but the story behind them began with a painful childhood accident involving one of his mother’s insulin syringes.
In his new memoir, I Only Shout So You Can Hear Me, the “Turn Down for What” rapper reveals that he accidentally stabbed himself in the eye when he was just 6 years old. The injury left him with lasting eye problems and eventually helped shape the look that became synonymous with his hip-hop persona.
According to an interview with People, Lil Jon had watched his mother, who had diabetes, give herself insulin injections. One day, his curiosity got the better of him, and he picked up a syringe to see what the air would feel like against his eye.

Instead, he accidentally jabbed himself in the eyeball.
The injury resulted in a traumatic cataract and required multiple operations, including a corneal transplant, according to the memoir excerpts reported by People.
The physical recovery was only part of the challenge. At school, Lil Jon says he had to wear a metal eye patch, which made him a target for bullying and contributed to his shyness as a child.
The injury eventually left him with a lazy eye. Although he underwent another operation to correct it, he continued wearing sunglasses — a choice that became a defining part of his public image.
What began as a painful reminder of a childhood accident ultimately became one of hip-hop’s most recognizable looks.
Lil Jon also describes how the experience motivated him to prove people wrong. His journey from a shy child dealing with an injury and schoolyard bullying to an internationally recognized rapper adds another layer to the story behind his larger-than-life stage persona.
The revelation offers fans a different perspective on an accessory long associated with his energetic performances, booming ad-libs and unmistakable presence in music.
His memoir, I Only Shout So You Can Hear Me, is scheduled for release on October 20, 2026.
