NFL Icon Michael Vick Takes Helm as Norfolk State University Head Coach

Michael Vick, legendary NFL quarterback and Newport News native, has been officially named the head football coach at Norfolk State University, a prominent HBCU. The announcement was made on Tuesday, December 17, and a formal introductory press conference is scheduled for next week.

Vick steps into the role following the departure of Dawson Odums, who was let go after a four-season tenure with a 15-30 record. This marks Vick’s first head coaching position and a significant milestone in his post-NFL career.

Vick’s Excitement to Lead Norfolk State

Taking to Facebook, Vick expressed his gratitude and enthusiasm for the new role:

“It’s an honor to announce that I’ll be the new head coach of Norfolk State University… looking forward to coming back home.”

The four-time Pro Bowl quarterback has already begun assembling his coaching staff, with reports suggesting that his cousin, Dwight Vick, and former UVA player Elton Brown, both Hampton natives, will join the Norfolk State Spartans team.

Learning from the Best

During his playing days, Vick had the privilege of working under coaching legends Andy Reid and Mike Tomlin, two of the NFL’s most respected leaders. Vick even served as a training camp intern for Reid with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2017, further honing his skills and understanding of the game from a coaching perspective.

In a past podcast interview with ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Vick revealed his passion for teaching and mentoring young athletes.

“I think my heart is really into teaching, you know, the game of football,” Vick shared. “I feel like I’ve learned so much from so many great coaches over the years. You know, I don’t want to bottle up a lot of knowledge… I want to relay the messages that I’ve learned to the next generation.”

A New Chapter for Norfolk State

Vick’s hiring has generated excitement among Norfolk State University students, alumni, and fans. With his wealth of experience and deep ties to the Virginia community, many believe he has the potential to transform the Spartans into a powerhouse program.

The Legacy Continues

As a trailblazer in the NFL known for his electrifying playing style, Michael Vick’s transition into coaching represents the next step in his storied career. By leading Norfolk State University, Vick is not only returning to his roots but also giving back to the HBCU community.
