Nolan Xavier Wells’ Family Requests Independent Autopsy as Horn Island Investigation Continues
The family of 18-year-old Nolan Xavier Wells is seeking an independent autopsy as authorities continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the Mississippi teen’s death following a Fourth of July trip to Horn Island.
Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who is representing Wells’ family, announced that an independent examination will be conducted in Washington, D.C. The request comes after the family expressed concerns about the official investigation into Wells’ disappearance and death.
While investigators have said they currently believe Wells drowned and have reported finding no evidence of foul play, officials have emphasized that the investigation remains active.

Disappearance During July 4 Trip
According to investigators, Wells traveled to the remote Mississippi barrier island with friends on July 4.
Authorities said he did not return to the mainland with the group, prompting a multiagency search effort.
On July 6, officials recovered a body believed to be Wells.
Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter previously said investigators believe Wells remained on Horn Island after the others left.
“They left Horn Island and went back without Nolan,” Ledbetter said. “From what we understand, he chose to stay there.”
Investigators continue reviewing evidence and interviewing witnesses as they work to establish exactly what occurred during Wells’ final hours.
Family Seeks Independent Examination
Crump said Wells’ family has requested an independent autopsy because they want additional answers about the circumstances surrounding his death.
Speaking to ABC News, Crump described Wells as a promising young man.
“He was a good kid. Was beloved. He was a college athlete. He had everything going for him,” Crump said.
“And so to go on that island … and then not to come back is what is concerning.”
According to Crump, the independent autopsy will take place in Washington, D.C.

Authorities Say Investigation Remains Active
Law enforcement officials have stated that investigators currently believe Wells drowned.
At this stage, authorities have said they have not identified evidence of foul play.
However, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office has stressed that detectives are continuing to gather evidence and conduct interviews as part of the ongoing investigation.
No final determination has been announced.
Questions Raised by the Family
Crump said Wells’ family disputes the preliminary assessment provided by investigators.
According to the attorney, family members have questions about events leading up to Wells’ disappearance.
Crump also said investigators informed the family that they had not found evidence suggesting foul play.
“Investigators continue to tell the family that, ‘We don’t see any evidence of any foul play,'” Crump said.
He further stated that students allegedly recorded an altercation while the group was on the boats, though authorities have not publicly confirmed that any such incident is connected to Wells’ death.
Crump also said Wells’ cellphone reportedly left the island with friends and contained deleted messages when it was later returned to the family. Those statements reflect the family’s account through their attorney, and investigators have not publicly confirmed those claims.
According to Crump, Wells’ father described his son as an elite athlete and capable swimmer, contributing to the family’s skepticism about an accidental drowning.
“They’re just not accepting that Nolan drowned accidentally,” Crump said.

Why the Independent Autopsy Matters
Independent autopsies are sometimes requested by families seeking an additional medical opinion, particularly when questions remain about the circumstances surrounding a death.
The results of the independent examination may provide additional information, though investigators have not indicated whether it will alter the official investigation.
Authorities have not announced a final cause or manner of death beyond their preliminary assessment.
Investigation Continues
Investigators are continuing to ask anyone who visited Horn Island on July 4 to share photographs, videos or other information that may help establish a timeline of Wells’ final hours.
As both the official investigation and the independent autopsy move forward, Wells’ family says they remain focused on obtaining answers about what happened.
