Tennis legend Serena Williams is expanding her influence in the sports world by joining the ownership group of the WNBA’s newest franchise, the Toronto Tempo, according to ESPN. The Tempo, set to debut in 2026, will be the 15th team in the league.

Williams will not only be an investor but will also play a hands-on role in the team’s branding. According to the Tempo, she will help design jerseys and create exclusive merchandise collaborations for the franchise.

Serena Williams on Investing in Women’s Sports

For Williams, this move is about more than just basketball—it’s about elevating women’s sports.

“This moment is not just about basketball; it is about showcasing the true value and potential of female athletes,” Williams said. “I have always said that women’s sports are an incredible investment opportunity. I am excited to partner with Larry [Tanenbaum] and all of Canada in creating this new WNBA franchise and legacy.”

Why Toronto Holds a Special Place for Williams

The 23-time Grand Slam champion also expressed her deep connection to Canada, particularly Toronto.

“Canada has always been a special place for me. I played my first professional tennis game in Quebec City. And I love Toronto — the culture, the food, the people. I won my first Rogers Cup here when I was 19.”

Toronto Tempo Chairman Praises Serena Williams

Toronto Tempo’s chairman, Larry Tanenbaum, praised Williams’ impact both on and off the court.

“Serena Williams is an icon, a role model, and a force for change in the world,” Tanenbaum said. “She exemplifies the very best of what the Tempo stand for—we couldn’t be more honored to have Serena in our court.”

    Serena’s Expanding Sports Empire

Williams, widely regarded as one of the greatest tennis players of all time, won 73 titles, including 23 Grand Slam championships during her legendary career.

Beyond tennis, Williams has been making major investments in professional sports. She already owns stakes in:

    ✅ Miami Dolphins (NFL)
    ✅ Angel City FC (NWSL)
✅ Los Angeles Golf Club (TGL)

With her latest move into the WNBA, Williams continues to push for growth and investment in women’s sports.
