The Chaotic Scene Unfolds

The intense clash occurred during the 2025 PIAA 5A Basketball Tournament, where Meadville was leading Uniontown 63-55. As tensions flared both on and off the court, fans and players engaged in a heated altercation, prompting law enforcement officers in attendance to intervene. Video footage of the incident, which quickly spread across social media, showed punches being thrown and chaos erupting in the stands.

According to the Meadville City Police Department (MCPD), officers on-site immediately called for backup. With the arrival of additional units, law enforcement was able to contain the situation swiftly. Thankfully, no serious injuries were reported.

  • Three 16-year-olds—two from Meadville and one from Uniontown—were each charged with one count of disorderly conduct.
  • Reginald Grooms, 44, of Uniontown, was charged with one count of simple assault, one count of harassment, and one count of disorderly conduct.
  • Notorious Grooms, 18, of Uniontown, was charged with one count of disorderly conduct.
  • Malik Wilson, 25, of Meadville, and Joseph Chabot, 37, of Meadville, were also both charged with one count of disorderly conduct.

Meadville Disqualified from Playoffs

In response to the incident, the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) took decisive action by disqualifying Meadville’s basketball team from advancing to the second round of the playoffs, despite their victory. The organization cited the violent nature of the altercation and the necessity of maintaining sportsmanship and discipline within high school athletics.

The decision has sparked mixed reactions from the community, with some arguing that only those directly involved should face consequences, while others believe the entire team should be held accountable for not preventing the situation from escalating.

Community Reactions and Next Steps

Parents, students, and school officials have expressed disappointment over the events that transpired, emphasizing the importance of sportsmanship and discipline. Uniontown and Meadville administrators are working alongside law enforcement to review security measures at future games and to implement stricter policies aimed at preventing similar incidents.

As the legal process moves forward, those charged will face court proceedings, and further disciplinary actions from school districts may follow. The PIAA has also stated it will be reviewing its policies regarding player and fan behavior to ensure a safer environment for all participants in future tournaments.

This shocking incident serves as a reminder of the need for better crowd control measures at high school sporting events and highlights the consequences of violence in competitive sports settings.
