Khloé Kardashian is no stranger to stepping up for family—even when it’s not her own by blood.
In a deeply emotional reveal on her podcast Khloé in Wonder Land, the 41-year-old reality star opened up about her decision to become the primary caregiver for Amari Thompson, the 18-year-old brother of her ex, Tristan Thompson, who has severe disabilities.
The candid conversation shed light not just on Amari’s condition, but on Khloé’s unwavering commitment to love, legacy, and doing what’s right—regardless of where she and Tristan stand romantically.
“Amari Can’t Walk or Talk—But He’s Just Like Us”
In the July 30 episode of her podcast, Khloé addressed fan questions about why she took in Amari after the sudden death of Tristan’s mother, Andrea Thompson, in January 2023.
“For those who don’t know, Tristan has a younger brother who is 18 years old, and he is severely disabled,” Khloé shared.
“He has LGS (Lennox-Gastaut syndrome), which is a form of epilepsy. He can’t walk or talk. He’s never been able to talk.”
Andrea had been Amari’s sole caregiver while raising him in Canada. After her unexpected passing from a heart attack, Khloé, Tristan, and the Kardashian-Jenner family brought Amari to Los Angeles.
And Khloé? She made a choice.

While Tristan’s NBA career has him flying state-to-state, Khloé said the demands of professional basketball simply don’t align with Amari’s needs—especially since his condition causes multiple seizures per day.
“Tristan is in the NBA, and he’s in a different state literally every other day or every few days,” she explained.
“It’s just not conducive for Amari to be on that many planes. So Amari stays in LA with me.”
She emphasized that this was a decision she made with full intent—not obligation.
“I have chosen to take care of him. Because it’s not good that he travels. And I love having Amari be a part of my family.”
“He Deserves the Best Life We Know How to Give”
Khloé credits much of the hands-on care to two “sensational caretakers” who help support Amari, but her emotional involvement runs deep.
“We just want to provide Amari with the best, most beautiful life that we know how. And he deserves that.”
For Khloé, the responsibility is bigger than any relationship status with Tristan—it’s about honoring the bond she shared with his late mom.

“It’s so important for my kids, nieces, and nephews to be exposed to all different types of people in the world.”

She added that despite his inability to speak, Amari expresses joy, especially around the younger kids.
“If you know him well enough, you see the glimmer in his eyes. He’s just such an amazing young man. I’m so honored to have him in my life.”

Khloé hasn’t just spoken about her bond with Amari—she’s shown it.

Following Andrea’s passing, Tristan Thompson filed for legal guardianship of Amari in September 2023 and was granted primary legal responsibility. But with his NBA travel demands, Khloé continues to provide full-time, day-to-day care at her home in Los Angeles.
Tristan acknowledged her role during the birthday episode, saying:
