The Dallas Mavericks are struggling both on and off the court—and now even Southwest Airlines is getting in on the jokes.
The airline took a savage dig at the Mavs in an Instagram post on Thursday, throwing shade at the controversial trade that sent Luka Dončić to the Lakers in exchange for Anthony Davis.
Southwest’s Bold Jab
Southwest was attempting to defend its new checked bag policy, which now charges some customers for luggage, by making light of the uproar.
In a playful carousel post, the airline wrote:
“It’s not like we traded Luka…”
The jab instantly went viral, with many fans laughing at the Mavericks’ expense—including Patrick Mahomes’ mother, who found the joke hilarious.
Mavericks Fans Aren’t Laughing
But while the joke landed well with many, it likely didn’t sit well with Dallas Mavericks executives or their frustrated fan base.
Ever since the blockbuster trade, the Mavs have been taking heat:
- They sent 26-year-old superstar Luka Dončić to the Lakers.
- In return, they got 32-year-old injury-prone Anthony Davis.
- Many fans have boycotted games and demanded general manager Nico Harrison be fired.
One disgruntled Mavs supporter even told TMZ Sports last month that he was kicked out of the arena for trying to start an anti-Harrison chant.
More Problems for the Mavs
To make matters worse, Kyrie Irving tore his ACL, while Davis has been sidelined with injury issues. The team has struggled to stay afloat, and now Southwest’s jab is just adding insult to injury.
Safe to say, this was one flight the Mavericks didn’t enjoy.
