Nelly Blasts Kamala Harris, Defends Trump Inauguration Gig

    Nelly is not holding back.

The Grammy-winning rapper sparked major controversy this week after comments made during his appearance on HOT97’s Ebro in the Morning went viral. Speaking on backlash he’s faced for performing at Donald Trump’s 2017 inauguration, Nelly set the record straight—and in doing so, called out former Vice President Kamala Harris, her husband Doug Emhoff, and what he calls a culture of online clout-chasing without facts.

“Where did you get pro-Donald?” Nelly said. “What you had was respect for office.”

????️ “Respect for the Office”—Not a Trump Endorsement

Nelly made it clear that his appearance wasn’t about political alignment but about a deeper principle: respect for the position, regardless of who holds it.

“It’s great how people spin narratives to things that I think best fit whatever they’re against… Instead of giving a brother the exact fundamental of what he did, what he said. Nobody’s doing that anymore,” he said.

The rapper even compared the situation to his own marriage:

“I don’t agree with everything my wife does. I never endorsed any president.”

???? Nelly Goes Off in the Shade Room Comments

But the real drama popped off when Nelly entered the Shade Room comment section, where he not only defended himself and Snoop Dogg, but took direct aim at Kamala Harris and her husband.

“I’ll put whatever up—me and Snoop do more in the community and have been doing for over 20+ years—against any of you just on here talking trash,” he wrote.

    He detailed their impact:

    • Employing Black families
    • Sending students to HBCUs on scholarships
    • Supporting youth football programs in L.A., with many players making it to the NFL
    • Running nonprofits for Black boys in underserved communities

???? “We’re Black Men with Black Families—That Should Inspire You”

In a pointed jab at Harris, Nelly compared their personal and public lives:

“We are Black men married to beautiful Black women with Black children. That should be inspiring to most.”

    Then came the stinger:

“…But some of y’all have a problem with that because the ‘prosecutor’—who’s probably locked up more Black men than we’ve helped—is a woman of color with a white husband and white kid.”

Though he didn’t name Kamala Harris directly, the message was crystal clear to fans and followers—and social media lit up with responses on both sides.

???????? A Military Legacy and “Pride in Country”

Wrapping up the heated discussion, Nelly emphasized his family’s military background, pointing to a legacy of service and patriotism.

“I’m a military baby with a grand uncle who is a Tuskegee Airman and Red Tail that was very proud of his country.”

He reiterated that performing at the inauguration wasn’t about a paycheck, but about honoring the country and those who served:

“I told you it’s my respect for the office—meaning any president that calls upon Nelly, it would be an honor. Nothing to do with money.”

???? Social Media Reacts: “Real Talk or Deflection?”

As expected, the internet exploded with reactions:

    • “Nelly spitting facts. Respect the work he’s done for the culture.”
    • “This ain’t it. Deflecting with community work doesn’t erase performing for Trump.”
    • “The Kamala line? Yikes. That was personal.”

While some fans applauded Nelly for speaking out, others criticized him for what they saw as deflecting accountability and dragging Kamala Harris into unrelated territory.

    ???? So… What’s Really Going On?

This isn’t the first time Nelly has clashed with critics online—but this moment hits harder because it touches on:

    • The complex relationship between hip-hop and politics
    • Civic duty vs. celebrity endorsement
    • Race, respectability, and who gets to define “community leadership”

The internet debate is far from over—and with Nelly trending again, one thing is certain: his comments have reignited deeper questions about loyalty, leadership, and legacy in Black America.

    ???? What Do You Think?

Was Nelly just speaking his truth—or did he cross a line with his Kamala comments?
