Eminem Reveals He ‘Cried’ After Missing Daughter’s Recital in 2007

In his powerful new documentary STANS, Eminem gets candid about one of the darkest moments in his life—a near-fatal overdose in 2007 that almost cost him everything.

“I woke up in the hospital and I didn’t know what the f— happened,” the 52-year-old rap icon reveals in the film, sharing how he struggled with addiction and nearly lost his life.

    The Overdose That Changed Everything

Eminem described a vicious cycle of depression and pill abuse that culminated in the overdose.

“I got into this vicious cycle of, ‘I’m depressed so I need more pills,’ and then your tolerance gets so high you end up overdosing,” he says in STANS.

Waking up hooked to tubes, unable to move, Eminem faced a life-altering choice: keep spiraling or fight to live—for himself and his family.

Missing Hailie’s Recital: The Moment That Broke Him

The real heartbreak came when Eminem missed his daughter Hailie Jade’s first guitar recital.

“I had this video that they brought me because I missed Hailie’s recital,” he recalls. “The amount of guilt I felt—I cried when I saw it because I was like, ‘Oh my God, I missed that.’”

Hailie, now 29, has been a constant source of strength for Eminem throughout his life and career. Missing such a milestone was a wake-up call that shook him to his core.

    Choosing Sobriety for His Family

    Eminem confronted a painful question:

“Do you want to miss everything? If you can’t do it for yourself… then at least do it for them.”

That resolve led to his sobriety beginning in April 2008, a decision he credits with saving his life and career.

    Life After Recovery

Eminem’s 2009 album Relapse marked the early days of his recovery journey. Over the years, he’s openly discussed his struggles, from taking up to 20 pills a day to rediscovering joy in sobriety.

In April 2024, he celebrated 16 years sober with a heartfelt Instagram post, sharing a photo of his sobriety chip and reflecting on his journey.

“I remember when I first got sober… everything was f—ing new to me again,” he told Paul Pod podcast in 2022.

    About the Documentary STANS

Named after his 2000 hit song, STANS explores the complex relationship between Eminem’s intensely private nature and his global superstar status.

The film features rare archival footage, stylized recreations, and intimate interviews—including an exclusive with Eminem himself. It also spotlights the real-life “stans” who have connected deeply with his music over the decades.

STANS is showing in AMC Theatres from August 7–10 and will stream internationally on Paramount+ later this year.

    Fans React

Since the documentary’s release, fans and critics alike have praised Eminem’s raw honesty and vulnerability, shedding new light on the man behind the music.
