Hollywood is mourning the loss of Jon Miyahara — the actor who stole hearts and laughs as Brett Kobashigawa on NBC’s hit sitcom Superstore. Miyahara died on Wednesday at the age of 83, with his wife, Chiyo, by his side, his family confirmed to TMZ.

Pennie Cappasola, Jon’s daughter, says the family is touched by the wave of love pouring in from fans and former co-stars. “He loved working on Superstore,” she shared, adding that the messages have brought comfort during a devastating time.

    Final Days Before His Passing

According to law enforcement sources, Miyahara’s health took a turn just days before his death. On July 28, paramedics were called to his Los Angeles-area home around 7:15 p.m. after he suffered a fall the previous day and was experiencing significant pain.

Police say Jon was “awake and breathing” when transported to a local hospital. It remains unclear whether he passed away in the hospital or at home, but the sudden turn shocked friends, fans, and co-workers alike.

    A Fan-Favorite Without Saying a Word

Miyahara’s portrayal of Brett on Superstore became an unlikely pop culture moment. The character — a quiet, cardigan-wearing Cloud 9 employee — rarely spoke, but Jon’s sharp comedic timing and unforgettable facial expressions turned him into a fan-favorite.

Co-star Colton Dunn, who played Garrett on the series, shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram, posting a behind-the-scenes photo of Jon in character. “He could speak volumes with just a look,” Dunn said. “Jon was amazing. He didn’t do this for fame — he did it because he loved it.”

In an exclusive statement to TMZ, Dunn revealed that Miyahara was already retired when he joined Superstore, taking the role purely out of passion. “Background actors work very long hours and get little recognition or compensation,” Dunn said. “But as you can see from the response, he made a mark.”

    From Background to Breakout

While Superstore was Miyahara’s only major screen credit, his presence left an undeniable impact. Fans often pointed out that Brett’s deadpan reactions and subtle comedic beats sometimes stole the scene from the main cast — a rare feat for a background character.

On social media, tributes flooded in from Superstore viewers who felt connected to the quiet charm of Brett. One fan wrote, “Brett was the heart of Cloud 9. Rest easy, Jon.” Another tweeted, “His reactions were worth rewinding every time.”

    Remembering Jon Miyahara

Though his Hollywood résumé was small, Jon Miyahara’s legacy proves that you don’t need lines to leave a lasting impression. His work on Superstore highlighted the importance of every role, no matter how big or small, in making a show memorable.

Miyahara is survived by his wife, Chiyo, his daughter, Pennie, and the millions of fans who will never forget Brett’s quiet but powerful presence in the aisles of Cloud 9.

    He was 83 years old.

Rest in peace, Jon. The lights at Cloud 9 shine a little dimmer today.
