Will.i.am Sparks Hip-Hop Firestorm After Saying Black Thought Is “A Trillion Times” Better Than JAY-Z

The Black Eyed Peas frontman made waves this week after boldly declaring that The Roots’ legendary lyricist Black Thought is “a trillion times” better than Hov. The comment — made during a candid chat on Sway in the Morning — instantly set social media ablaze, drawing strong reactions from fans and even prompting a fiery clapback from rap heavyweight Jadakiss.

Will.i.am Doubles Down on Black Thought Praise

Speaking on the SiriusXM show, Will.i.am didn’t mince words when explaining why he ranks Black Thought above one of hip-hop’s most celebrated MCs.

“Seeing Black Thought, what he’s capable of just off the top,” Will said. “Don’t get me wrong, but Jay has already said everything. He’s just regurgitating what he already said.”

The Grammy-winning producer went on to praise Black Thought’s creativity and lyrical freshness, suggesting that the Philadelphia MC continually surprises listeners with original bars.

“Everything that Black Thought comes up with, it’s like, ‘Wow, I never heard that one,’” he continued. “A lot of people would say, ‘What the fk do you know about hip-hop, Will.i.am?’ I don’t give a fk what you think.”

Hip-Hop Community Reacts — Jadakiss Fires Back

It didn’t take long for Will’s comments to get back to Jadakiss, who addressed them head-on during the Joe and Jada Podcast with Fat Joe. The Yonkers legend accused Will.i.am of trying to spark unnecessary conflict for attention.

“Leave our f**king culture alone,” Jada said bluntly. “That’s my opinion. Because you’re starting off some sh*t and then he’s going to be in the state-of-the-art hills somewhere making cars… We need no more nuclear bombs set off in hip-hop unless it’s called for. This guy’s a rich tech… he makes cars.”

Jada made it clear he wasn’t here for the controversy, adding:

“He should have kept his thoughts to himself.”

“These Debates Only Happen in Hip-Hop”

Jadakiss didn’t just take issue with Will.i.am’s ranking — he took aim at the bigger picture. He pointed out that these “who’s better” debates seem to be unique to the rap game, and that they often pit artists against each other in a way that hurts the culture.

“You’re never going to hear a rapper say f***ing Coldplay is a million times better than the Black Eyed Peas,” Jada said. “They put that out there, and that’s the reason hip-hop is hanging on a string.”

    He continued:

“They’re f*ing making everybody go against each other for no reason. Just for small talk and clicks and to get the most traffic to your thing. If that’s how he feels, fk it. That’s how he feels. You can Google, ChatGPT, whatever the f**k you want. You’re not going to find Hov or Black Thought nowhere saying, ‘The Backstreet Boys are a trillion times better than *NSYNC.’”

    The Internet Weighs In

Once the clip hit the internet, hip-hop fans wasted no time choosing sides. On X (formerly Twitter), threads exploded with heated arguments:

    • Team Black Thought praised Will.i.am for giving flowers to an MC often considered underrated by mainstream audiences.
    • Team Hov accused Will of disrespecting a cultural icon whose impact stretches far beyond his discography.
    • Some fans argued that comparing the two is pointless because their styles, eras, and contributions to hip-hop are vastly different.

Why This Debate Strikes a Nerve in Hip-Hop

While rap rivalries and lyrical debates are nothing new, Jadakiss’ point hits home — these conversations often turn toxic. Unlike other genres, where legends are celebrated without constant comparison, hip-hop culture frequently frames greatness as a zero-sum game.

Black Thought and JAY-Z have both been widely praised for their wordplay, storytelling, and consistency. But the narrative that one’s success must come at the expense of another’s legacy feeds into the “divide and conquer” dynamic that many veteran artists have warned about for years.

The Legacy of Black Thought vs. JAY-Z

    For context:

    • Black Thought (Tariq Trotter) has been the lyrical backbone of The Roots since the late ’80s, celebrated for his intricate flows and thought-provoking rhymes. He’s often hailed as one of the greatest live MCs in history.
    • JAY-Z (Shawn Carter) is a 24-time Grammy winner, billionaire entrepreneur, and one of hip-hop’s most commercially and critically successful artists. His influence spans music, business, and culture at large.

In other words — both are elite, but they represent different archetypes in hip-hop’s pantheon.

Jadakiss responds to https://t.co/vSa99KARxp saying Black Thought is a trillion times better than Jay-Z:

“Leave our culture alone… The type of music you do ain’t even our type of music, to just go up there and put two people against each other…”

    The Final Word (For Now)

Whether Will.i.am’s comment was an honest opinion, an intentional stir-up, or a bit of both, one thing’s certain: he’s reignited an age-old hip-hop debate. And judging by the reaction, it won’t be dying down anytime soon.

What do YOU think? Is Black Thought really “a trillion times” better than JAY-Z, or is this just hip-hop clickbait in action? Sound off in the comments — and stay tuned for more exclusive celebrity and music news from The Pop Radar.
