In a revealing interview with PEOPLE, rap legend Eminem detailed the harrowing overdose he suffered in 2007 — a moment that forced him to confront his spiraling addiction and commit to sobriety.

The Stan rapper describes waking up in a hospital bed, unable to move and confused about what had happened. The incident came after years trapped in a “vicious cycle” of depression and dependence on pills.

“After the overdose, I came home going, ‘Yo, bro, I need something… I’m going to die if I don’t do something,’” Eminem said.

“I didn’t know what the f— happened. It seemed like I fell asleep, and I woke up with tubes in me and s—. I wanted to get up. I couldn’t move.”

A New Chapter Begins With Relapse

Following the overdose, Eminem channeled his experiences into his 2009 album Relapse, marking the start of his recovery journey. Though the album had a lukewarm reception, it signaled a turning point.

“You’ve gotta do something different,” he said. “Why don’t you try embracing sobriety?”

    Treating Sobriety Like a Superpower

Today, Eminem proudly views sobriety as one of his greatest strengths.

“I realized I’m not embarrassed anymore about it, and I started treating sobriety like a superpower. I was proud of the fact that I could quit.”

What to Expect From the Documentary STANS

The upcoming documentary STANS — named after Eminem’s iconic 2000 hit — offers an intimate and raw look at the rapper’s complicated relationship with fame and himself.

According to the synopsis, the film includes stylized recreations, rare archival footage, and exclusive interviews with Eminem himself, giving fans a loud, raw, and revealing journey through his career and the passionate audience that has followed him.

    When and Where to Watch

STANS will be available internationally on Paramount+ later this year, offering fans an unprecedented view of one of hip-hop’s most private stars.
