Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones stunned fans and the NFL world this week by revealing he was diagnosed with stage 4 melanoma more than 15 years ago—but survived thanks to an experimental therapy.

Speaking with The Dallas Morning News, Jones shared that doctors first delivered the grim diagnosis in June 2010, prompting immediate action from the now 82-year-old sports mogul.

“I went into trials for that PD-1, and it has been one of the great medicines,” Jones said, referring to Programmed Cell Death Protein 1 therapy, a cutting-edge treatment designed to help the immune system target and eliminate cancer cells.

    He proudly confirmed,

    “I now have no tumors.”

Turning to MD Anderson for Life-Saving Treatment

Jones wasted no time seeking care at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, one of the world’s leading cancer hospitals. It was there that he began PD-1 therapy, which blocks a protein that cancer cells use to evade the immune system.

This innovative approach, now widely used for advanced melanoma and other cancers, played a critical role in saving the Cowboys owner’s life, according to Jones.

“It has been one of the great medicines,” he emphasized, highlighting the dramatic impact of medical research on survival rates for aggressive cancers like melanoma.

    Public Revelation and Netflix Spotlight

While Jones first referenced his cancer battle publicly during the Netflix series “America’s Team: The Gambler and His Cowboys,” this recent interview marks his most detailed disclosure of the diagnosis and treatment journey.

During the Netflix docuseries, Jones noted he had gone to MD Anderson “about a dozen years ago” for cancer treatments—hinting at the challenges behind the scenes while managing the Cowboys empire.

Thriving Despite a Serious Health Scare

Despite his 82 years and a past cancer battle, Jones shows no signs of slowing down, continuing to lead the Dallas Cowboys with his signature flair.

At Cowboys training camp this summer, he maintained his playful banter with reporters and remained fully engaged in team operations, proving his resilience both on and off the field.

“I’m healthy, I’m engaged, and I’m ready to keep doing what I love,” Jones said, reflecting a lifetime of determination and leadership.

    The Legacy of PD-1 Therapy

PD-1 therapy, a form of immunotherapy, has revolutionized treatment for patients with advanced melanoma. By blocking the PD-1 protein, the therapy allows the body’s immune system to recognize and attack cancer cells more effectively.

Jones’ story underscores the importance of clinical trials and experimental treatments, offering hope for others facing life-threatening diagnoses.

“It saved my life,” Jones said simply, stressing the game-changing impact of medical innovation on survival outcomes.

Jerry Jones’ Message to Fans and Patients

Jones’ revelation also serves as a message of hope: early detection, aggressive treatment, and cutting-edge therapies can change the trajectory of even the most severe cancer diagnoses.

“I want people to know there are options, and medical advances can make a real difference,” he said.

As the Cowboys prepare for the upcoming season, Jones remains a pillar of strength, demonstrating how health challenges can be met with courage, optimism, and perseverance.
