Los Angeles is paying tribute to Nipsey Hussle in a major way. To honor what would have been the late rapper’s 40th birthday on August 15, the Los Angeles Metropolitan Transportation Authority launched a heartfelt campaign highlighting Hussle’s enduring impact on music, culture, and community.
Hyde Park Station Becomes “Nipsey Hussle Station”
As part of the initiative, LA Metro temporarily renamed Hyde Park Station to “Nipsey Hussle Station” and unveiled two limited edition TAP cards featuring the iconic artist. ABC7 Los Angeles reports that the effort is part of Metro’s Metro x Culture program, which seeks to connect the agency with Los Angeles’ rich cultural landscape by collaborating with local artists, musicians, community heroes, and influential brands.
Metro CEO Stephanie Wiggins emphasized the significance of the tribute:
“Hussle’s legacy goes far beyond music. He was a visionary who understood the power of community, connection, and opportunity. At Metro, we share his belief that public transportation is more than just a way to get around; it’s a vital lifeline that can unite neighborhoods, open doors, and uplift lives.”
Family Reflects on Nipsey’s Early Years
Nipsey Hussle’s family also issued a statement, sharing their pride in partnering with Metro to honor the rapper:
“Access to Metro played a vital role in providing transportation from South Central to Watts to pursue his early musical aspirations,” they said.
The family highlighted how Metro bridged the gap between neighborhoods and Hussle’s vision:
“Metro helped bridge the gap, not just between neighborhoods, but between his vision and his future. Metro provides access and opportunity to so many people who, without this resource, wouldn’t be able to pursue their passions. We hope insight into Hussle’s early years utilizing the Metro will bring light to Hussle’s favorite quote: ‘The highest human act is to inspire.’”
Remembering a Life Cut Short
On March 31, 2019, Nipsey Hussle was tragically shot and killed outside his Marathon Clothing store at the age of 33. Since then, the alleged shooter, Eric Holder, has been found guilty and is serving a sentence of 60 years to life.
Despite his untimely death, Hussle’s influence continues to ripple through Los Angeles and the world at large—through music, entrepreneurship, and community activism. The Metro tribute serves as a powerful reminder of his enduring legacy and the lives he touched.
Limited Edition TAP Cards & Community Impact
The commemorative TAP cards are designed to honor Hussle’s contributions and serve as a tangible way for fans and Angelenos to celebrate his memory. Beyond the station renaming, Metro hopes the campaign inspires residents to reflect on Hussle’s dedication to community, access, and opportunity.
