The college basketball community is mourning the sudden loss of Deng Mayar, a 22-year-old forward for the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO), who tragically drowned Saturday at Blackridge Reservoir in Herriman, Utah according to ABC affiliate KETV and Fox 13.
The Tragic Accident
Authorities received a 911 call at 5:45 PM reporting two individuals in distress while swimming at the reservoir, roughly 25 miles southwest of Salt Lake City.
According to law enforcement, Mayar’s friend, Sa Mafutaga, saw him struggling after reaching the shore and bravely reentered the water to try to save him. Deng went under about 35 yards away from the shore, and bystanders also jumped in to assist but were unable to reach him.
After several hours of searching, the Unified Fire Authority, South Jordan Fire Department, and Utah Highway Patrol dive team recovered Mayar’s body at 11:00 PM. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police continue to investigate the incident, and the reservoir remains closed “until further notice by Herriman City.”
Remembering Deng Mayar
Mayar, a 6’8” forward from Salt Lake City, began his college career at the University of North Dakota before transferring to UNO this past offseason. He was expected to suit up for the Mavericks this fall and had been making remarkable progress over the summer.
UNO head coach Chris Crutchfield expressed heartbreak over the loss:
“Our entire program is devastated to learn of Deng’s passing. After competing against him for two years, we were elated to add him to our team, and he made tremendous progress this summer. Deng was a joy to be around and made our culture better.”
Crutchfield added:
“We will miss him greatly. Jodi and I, along with our entire program, send our hearts and prayers to Deng’s family, friends, and teammates.”

Mayar’s talent on the court and his positive energy off it left an impact on teammates and fans alike. His sudden death is a devastating loss for the UNO basketball program, the college basketball community, and everyone who knew him personally.
