Steve Smith Sr. showed fans that he’s trying to keep his sense of humor despite facing a lawsuit for allegedly ruining a marriage earlier this year. The former All-Pro wide receiver couldn’t resist a sly quip while providing color commentary during the Panthers vs. Steelers game Thursday night at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte.

    Bojangles Promo Sparks Laughs

During the broadcast, one of Smith’s boothmates read off a Bojangles promo, offering Panthers fans a free chicken sandwich if they scanned a QR code on their screens.

When the conversation shifted to whether Smith would chip in and add more food items to fans’ bags, he joked about his current legal situation:

“Man, ya’ll know my situation. I can’t afford to be helping anybody right now!”

The booth erupted with laughter, with Smith’s colleagues needing several moments to regain composure before resuming the broadcast.

Steve Smith Sr. was asked if he'd treat fans to a Bojangles chicken sandwich if they see him.

"Nah, bro, it's one chicken sandwich. Man, y'all know my situation. I can't afford to be helping anybody right now." https://t.co/Lmnbro7AjH pic.twitter.com/IdOZmGViQl

    The Lawsuit in Question

Smith was sued in April 2025 by Antonio Martinez, who alleged that the ex-NFL star interfered in his marriage with Nicole Martinez. The lawsuit claims Smith “willfully, maliciously, and intentionally” seduced Nicole during a September 2024 encounter in Baltimore, which allegedly led to the couple’s breakup.

Antonio Martinez is seeking over $100,000 in damages from the lawsuit.

    Steve Smith Pushes Back

Smith has already taken legal action to defend himself, filing to dismiss the case last month. Despite the seriousness of the situation, his on-air joke showed fans that he’s determined to face the challenges with humor and a lighthearted attitude.

The NFL community and fans alike have taken note of Smith’s ability to maintain composure under pressure, even when navigating public legal battles.

    What’s Next?

The case is ongoing in North Carolina, and legal experts predict a potential court showdown in the coming months. Meanwhile, Smith continues to work broadcasts and stay active in the NFL community, showing that he’s moving forward despite the controversy.
