A shocking mid-air collision occurred over Fort Morgan, Colorado on Sunday, sending smoke spiraling into the sky and igniting one of the aircraft involved.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the crash involved a Cessna 172 and an Extra Flugzeugbau EA300, which collided at approximately 12:10 PM local time. Both planes were carrying two people each.

    One Plane Catches Fire

The Morgan County Sheriff’s Office reported that one of the planes caught fire as it descended, while the other sustained severe damage. The dramatic scene was witnessed by residents on the ground, who described a sudden smoke column rising above the area.

“It was terrifying to see. The smoke just kept rising,” one local told TMZ.

    Passengers’ Conditions Unknown

At the time of reporting, authorities have not released information on the conditions of the four people on board. Emergency personnel responded quickly to the crash site, and officials continue to assess the situation.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the collision, with the NTSB taking the lead in determining the cause of the crash.

    Area and Aircraft Details

Fort Morgan, located about 80 miles northeast of Denver, is home to several small airfields, making it a hub for general aviation and recreational flights.

The Cessna 172 is a widely used light aircraft popular for training and personal use, while the Extra EA300 is a high-performance aerobatic plane. Both aircraft are known for their reliability, making a mid-air collision especially unusual and concerning.

    Community Reacts

News of the collision has quickly spread through local media and social platforms. Residents who witnessed the crash shared images of the smoke-filled sky, sparking concern and prayers for the passengers’ safety.

“Hoping everyone makes it out okay. Flying accidents like this are rare, but terrifying,” one social media user wrote.

    Investigations Underway

The FAA and NTSB are expected to conduct a full investigation, including reviewing flight paths, weather conditions, and pilot communications. Officials have urged residents to avoid the area to allow emergency crews to operate safely.

At this time, no cause has been determined, and authorities are advising caution while the scene remains active.

    Final Thoughts

Mid-air collisions are extremely rare in modern aviation, particularly involving general aviation aircraft like the Cessna 172 and Extra EA300. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks of aerial operations and the importance of thorough investigations.

Officials promise to release updates as soon as more information becomes available.
