Bryan Kohberger Reveals Autism & Mental Health Diagnoses Before Guilty Plea

Convicted Idaho killer Bryan Kohberger—the man who admitted to murdering four University of Idaho students in 2022—quietly revealed a series of mental health diagnoses just days before his shocking guilty plea.

In a handwritten court filing obtained by People, Kohberger disclosed that he had been formally diagnosed with:

    • Autism Spectrum Disorder (Level 1)
    • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
    • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
    • Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) — an eating disorder that severely limits diet

The 29-year-old said these conditions were identified in February 2025, months after he had already been jailed while awaiting trial for the brutal murders.

“No Effect on My Guilty Plea”

Despite listing the diagnoses, Kohberger insisted they had no bearing on his ability to understand the legal process or his decision to plead guilty.

He also revealed he was taking medication commonly used to treat hypothyroidism, though he did not specify why it was prescribed.

The filing, dated June 29, 2025, came just two days before Kohberger signed a written confession to the murders of:

    • Madison Mogen, 21
    • Kaylee Goncalves, 21
    • Xana Kernodle, 20
    • Ethan Chapin, 20

    The Murders That Shook America

The case horrified the nation after the four students were found stabbed to death inside an off-campus home in Moscow, Idaho, in November 2022.

The gruesome crime set off a nationwide manhunt and months of speculation before Kohberger, then a criminology PhD student at Washington State University, was arrested in December 2022.

The shocking details—including reports of his obsession with criminal behavior and surveillance footage linking him to the scene—turned the case into one of the most closely followed murder trials in recent history.

    Life in Prison Without Parole

On July 2, 2025, Kohberger stood before the court and admitted guilt, finally bringing an end to the lengthy legal battle.

He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, sparing the victims’ families from a drawn-out trial but ensuring he will die behind bars.

    Diagnoses Raise New Questions

The revelation of Kohberger’s mental health conditions has sparked debate online:

    • Some argue the diagnoses shed light on his behavior but do not excuse his crimes.
    • Others believe the timing of the disclosure may have been an attempt to influence sentencing.
    • Advocates for mental health awareness warn against stigmatizing autism and ADHD by linking them to violence, pointing out that the vast majority of people with such diagnoses do not commit crimes.

Still, the fact that Kohberger documented his conditions so close to his confession has only deepened public curiosity about his psychological state.

    Families Focus on Healing

While Kohberger’s diagnoses dominate headlines, the families of Madison, Kaylee, Xana, and Ethan remain focused on honoring their loved ones’ memories.

Memorials, scholarships, and ongoing vigils continue to remind the community of the lives lost in a tragedy that has permanently altered the small college town.

For many, the guilty plea offered a measure of closure—but no true justice can erase the pain.

    The Bottom Line

Bryan Kohberger is now a convicted mass murderer serving life in prison, but his late-breaking revelation of autism, OCD, ADHD, and ARFID ensures his case will continue to stir debate.

Was it a sincere disclosure, a legal strategy, or both?

Regardless, for the families of the four slain Idaho students, the focus remains on remembrance—not on the man who took their futures away.

Do you think Kohberger’s mental health diagnoses matter in understanding the case—or are they irrelevant given his guilty plea?
