    A Campus in Shock

The Delta State University community is grieving after the devastating discovery of 21-year-old student De’Martravion “Trey” Reed, whose body was found on campus early Monday morning.

Reed, described by family as “our little quiet light,” was discovered hanging from a tree by a faculty member around 7 a.m. The tragedy prompted the university to immediately cancel classes, giving students and staff space to process the heartbreaking news.

Word of Reed’s death spread quickly across the Cleveland, Mississippi, campus—sparking an outpouring of grief, fear, and urgent calls for transparency.

No Signs of Physical Assault, Authorities Say

Bolivar County Coroner Randolph Seals Jr. confirmed that Reed’s body showed no visible injuries typically associated with a violent attack.

“At this time, there is no evidence to suggest the individual was physically attacked before his death,” Seals said.

According to the coroner, Reed did not suffer broken bones, lacerations, contusions, or other trauma consistent with an assault. However, investigators stressed that the case remains open pending official autopsy results.

Police Urge Patience as Probe Continues

Delta State University Police Chief Michael Peeler addressed concerns, explaining that investigators are waiting on further findings from the state medical examiner.

“Pending further investigation and findings from the medical examiner’s office, we won’t have more information until that part has been done,” Peeler said.

So far, authorities have not uncovered evidence of foul play, but Reed’s family and classmates remain deeply uneasy.

Students Speak Out: “This Could Have Been Any of Us”

For many Black students on campus, the tragedy hit especially hard.

“Because I am a Black student, hearing that this happened to another Black student makes me feel unsafe,” student Stacie Hoskins told local reporters.

Another student, Eriana Murphy, shared her growing sense of unease: “I walk to class and I like to walk the track. It would be nice to know what happened.”

The grief has been compounded by fear—many students say they need clearer communication and stronger safety measures from campus officials.

    Family Calls for Accountability

Reed’s family is demanding clarity and refusing to let the case fade into silence.

“Please, do your own research on this. Do not let them sweep nothing under the rug. Enough is enough,” his cousin urged on social media.

In a heartfelt statement, relatives remembered Trey as a gentle soul:

“Trey was our little quiet light. He was sweet, well-mannered, and would give you the world if he could. We ask that you continue to keep our family in your prayers as we continue to navigate through these unforeseen times.”

Ben Crump Joins the Fight for Answers

Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, known for representing families in high-profile cases involving racial injustice, has now stepped in to lead an independent investigation into Reed’s death.

Crump’s involvement has fueled even greater national attention, as many draw parallels to past cases where young Black men’s deaths raised questions about transparency and justice.

A Broader Conversation: Mental Health & Campus Safety

Reed’s death has reignited difficult but necessary conversations about:

    • Mental health among college students, especially young Black men who often face stigma around seeking help.
    • Campus safety protocols, and whether universities are adequately protecting students.
    • Trust in investigations, with many communities of color feeling their tragedies are too often dismissed or inadequately examined.

For Delta State students, the unanswered questions surrounding Trey’s final moments are just as heavy as the grief itself.

    What’s Next

The official autopsy report is still pending, and investigators have not ruled out any possibilities. In the meantime, Reed’s family, classmates, and supporters are calling for vigilance and accountability.

For now, Trey Reed is being remembered as a kind, quiet young man who lit up every room he entered. His death leaves behind heartbreak—and a demand for truth that refuses to be silenced.

    Final Thoughts

The death of De’Martravion “Trey” Reed has left an entire university and community shaken, and his family determined to seek answers. Whether this tragedy leads to meaningful change in how campus safety and investigations are handled remains to be seen—but one thing is certain: Trey’s story will not be forgotten.

What do you think—are authorities doing enough to investigate Trey’s death, or is the Franklin family right to be worried about a cover-up? Drop your thoughts below and stay connected with The Pop Radar (TPR) for the latest updates.
