Colin Kaepernick is stepping up to support the family of Demartravion “Trey” Reed, the 21-year-old Mississippi student found dead earlier this month. Through his Know Your Rights Camp Autopsy Initiative, the former NFL star is covering the cost of a second, independent autopsy, aiming to give Reed’s loved ones the clarity and answers they feel are missing, according to civil rights attorney Ben Crump.
Crump announced the initiative on Friday, September 19, explaining that the family believes critical details about Reed’s death have not been fully addressed and are calling for a fresh review.
Tragic Discovery on Campus
Reed, a student at Delta State University in Grenada, Mississippi, was discovered hanging from a tree near the campus pickleball courts on the morning of September 15. The shocking scene led university officials to cancel classes as the community processed the news.
University police immediately involved local authorities, who later stated that no evidence of foul play had been found. Two days after the discovery, the Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s Office ruled Reed’s death a suicide by hanging. Toxicology results are still pending, expected to take several weeks to finalize.
The Bolivar County Coroner echoed the findings, noting that preliminary assessments found no signs of trauma or struggle prior to Reed’s death. Despite this, his family has raised questions about the official conclusions, voicing concerns over unanswered details.

Family Seeks Clarity and Justice
Attorney Ben Crump emphasized the emotional weight of the case, noting that Reed’s death has reopened deep wounds in the community.
“Trey’s death evoked the collective memory of a community that has suffered a historic wound over many, many years and many, many deaths,” Crump said. “Peace will come only by getting to the truth. We thank Colin Kaepernick for supporting this grieving family and the cause of justice and truth.”
Kaepernick’s involvement underscores a commitment to civil rights and justice, providing both financial and moral support to a family seeking answers in a devastating situation.
Investigations Are Ongoing
Multiple agencies are involved in reviewing Reed’s death, including the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation. While officials have largely remained tight-lipped, Cleveland Police confirmed that investigation records were sent to the FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for further review.
For Reed’s family, the independent autopsy funded by Kaepernick represents hope for clarity, truth, and closure. They hope it will address lingering questions and ensure that the circumstances of Trey’s death are fully understood.
Why This Matters
Tragic deaths on college campuses resonate deeply, especially when families feel answers are incomplete. By stepping in, Colin Kaepernick is not only aiding one grieving family but also shining a light on broader issues of justice, transparency, and accountability in investigations of young Black lives lost under unclear circumstances.
