KAMPALA – Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, better known as Bobi Wine, has officially joined the fray for Uganda’s 2026 presidential election, becoming the sixth candidate to meet nomination requirements. The National Unity Platform (NUP) leader completed the process Wednesday at the Electoral Commission headquarters in Kampala, with Justice Simon Byabakama confirming his nomination.
Bobi Wine first challenged long-time President Yoweri Museveni in 2021, marking a high-profile return to the political spotlight as he seeks to galvanize Uganda’s youth and reform-minded voters.
FDC’s Nandala Mafabi Enters as Reform Voice
The first nominee on Day 2 was Nandala Mafabi James Nathan, the veteran legislator and Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) stalwart. Known for his long-standing role in Ugandan politics, Mafabi is campaigning as a reformist voice, pledging to challenge entrenched systems and push for transparency in government.
“We need leaders who listen, engage, and serve the people,” Mafabi said after his nomination, highlighting his experience and dedication to Uganda’s democratic institutions.
ANT’s Gen. (Rtd) Mugisha Muntu Advocates for Justice
Also stepping into the race was General (Rtd) Mugisha Muntu of the Alliance for National Transformation (ANT). Muntu emphasized the importance of rule of law and justice, signaling a platform grounded in accountability and ethical governance.
“We have the discipline and the ability to provide capable leadership… Peace is not the absence of war; it is the presence of justice. We need a system where everyone, including the President, bows to the law,” Muntu told reporters after securing his nomination.
Incumbent Museveni Seeks Another Term
So far, the nomination process has produced six candidates, including incumbent President Yoweri Museveni, who has ruled since 1986 and is aiming to extend his tenure. With the February 2026 ballot approaching, more candidates are expected to enter the race as the week’s nomination window continues.
The political contest is shaping up to be a heated battle between long-standing leadership and rising opposition forces, drawing national and international attention to Uganda’s evolving democratic landscape.
