Letitia James and Bernie Sanders to Swear In Zohran Mamdani as NYC’s Next Mayor

New York City is preparing for a historic transition at City Hall — and the figures leading it signal exactly where the city’s political future may be headed.

New York Attorney General Letitia James and Senator Bernie Sanders will officially swear in Zohran Mamdani as the next mayor of New York City, according to CBS News. The dual ceremony places two of the nation’s most prominent progressive leaders at the center of Mamdani’s rise, underscoring the movement-driven message that defined his campaign.

A Progressive Swearing-In With National Weight

Attorney General James will administer Mamdani’s official oath of office during the formal ceremony, while Sanders will later preside over Mamdani’s public swearing-in, making the moment both ceremonial and symbolic.

“It’s an honor to swear in Zohran alongside his family,” James said.
“He ran a campaign that brought together New Yorkers around the universal idea that we should all be able to afford to live in our city.”

James emphasized that affordability, public safety, and equity were central to Mamdani’s campaign — and will be central to his administration.

“I look forward to working with him and his administration to deliver on that vision as we keep all New Yorkers safe,” she added.

Bernie Sanders: ‘The Future of New York Belongs to the People’

Senator Bernie Sanders framed Mamdani’s victory as larger than a single mayoral race — calling it a milestone for working-class political power nationwide.

“At a moment when democracy is under attack and cynicism about our politics runs deep, Zohran Mamdani represents a new generation of progressive leadership rooted in courage, integrity, and solidarity,” Sanders said.

Sanders described Mamdani’s win as proof that grassroots organizing can still overcome entrenched wealth and political influence.

“His victory is not just about one city or one election,” Sanders continued.
“It is about the strength of a working-class movement that says unequivocally: the future of New York belongs to the people, not the billionaire class.”

Mamdani Calls Ceremony a ‘New Era’ for NYC

Mamdani expressed deep gratitude for having two leaders he has long admired administer his swearing-in, calling the moment both personal and political.

“It is an honor to be sworn in by two leaders I have admired for years: Attorney General Tish James and Senator Bernie Sanders,” Mamdani said in a statement.

He praised James for taking on powerful institutions in defense of everyday New Yorkers.

“Attorney General James has taken on powerful interests in her defense of New Yorkers and embodied the principle of equal justice before the law,” he said.

Mamdani also credited Sanders with shaping the ideological foundation of his movement.

“Senator Bernie Sanders laid the foundations for our movement with his steadfast commitment to the dignity of working people — his belief in a government that serves the many, not just the few,” Mamdani added.
“I can think of no better leaders to help usher in a new era for New York City.”

The ceremony is expected to draw national attention as Mamdani formally takes office, marking a shift in leadership shaped by affordability, labor rights, and progressive reform.

    Why This Moment Matters

With Letitia James and Bernie Sanders at his side, Mamdani’s swearing-in sends a clear message:
New York City’s next chapter is being written by a coalition focused on working-class power, systemic reform, and progressive governance.

As Mamdani steps into office, all eyes will be on how campaign promises translate into policy — and whether this moment signals a broader realignment in America’s largest city.
