Doechii Opens Up About Overcoming Bullying, Suicidal Thoughts, and Finding Her Identity
Grammy-winning rapper Doechii recently opened up about her struggles with bullying and suicidal thoughts during her school years, revealing how a profound moment of clarity led to the birth of her stage name. In an emotional interview with The Cut, she reflected on the difficult experiences that shaped her journey and ultimately empowered her to reclaim her narrative.
A Dark Chapter Turned Into a Defining Moment
During her sixth-grade year, Doechii endured relentless bullying that pushed her into a dark place. “I don’t want to get super-dark [but] I was getting bullied so bad that I was thinking about killing myself,” she admitted. However, in the midst of her despair, she experienced what she described as a divine revelation—one that changed the trajectory of her life.
At her lowest point, she recalled hearing a powerful inner voice instructing her to write down the phrase “I am Doechii.” That moment became a turning point, making her realize that succumbing to her pain would only erase her own existence while her bullies carried on unaffected.
“I realized, Oh, fuck, I’m gonna kill myself and then I’m gonna be the only one dead. The bullies aren’t gonna be with me, and everything they said is not coming with me either. I would just be gone,” she shared. Instead of allowing their words to define her fate, she made a conscious decision to take control of her own story. “And then I was like, Fuck that! Fuck that shit! I’m not going for that! And this wash of peace came over me, and I received ‘I am Doechii.’”
Turning Pain Into Power
That realization became the foundation of her self-empowerment. Doechii described the experience as an awakening, saying, “I made a choice, a decision. I am the most important character in this movie. This is my motherfucking movie.”
Her journey serves as a testament to resilience and self-love, inspiring many who have faced similar struggles. Today, she stands as a successful artist who has not only survived but thrived, channeling her past pain into her music and artistry.
Shared Struggles in the Music Industry
Doechii is not the only artist from Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE) to share her struggles with bullying. Fellow labelmate SZA has also been vocal about her challenging high school experience. In a 2023 interview with PEOPLE, SZA opened up about feeling isolated due to her unique personality. “I was bullied because I wasn’t quiet and I was awkward at the same time,” she explained.
