Tyler Perry is pushing back in court against a $77 million lawsuit filed by Mario Rodriguez, with the filmmaker’s legal team accusing Rodriguez of using a deposition dispute as an attempt to pressure him into settling the case.

According to new court documents obtained by TMZ, Perry’s attorneys argue that the filmmaker has not refused to participate in the legal process and say he already agreed to sit for a deposition.

The filing comes after Rodriguez asked the court to sanction Perry for allegedly failing to appear for questioning, including questions Rodriguez wanted to ask about Perry’s sexual orientation.

Perry’s team argues those questions are unrelated to the claims at the center of the lawsuit and says he will continue defending himself in court.

The allegations against Perry remain disputed, and he has denied any wrongdoing.

Tyler Perry Responds to Deposition Dispute

The latest legal filing centers on a disagreement over what questions can be asked during discovery.

According to Perry’s legal team, Rodriguez claimed Perry would not participate in a deposition unless Rodriguez agreed not to ask about his sexual orientation.

    Perry’s attorneys dispute that characterization.

In the filing, Perry argues that he is not refusing to answer questions because of embarrassment or discomfort. Instead, his team says questions about his sexual orientation are irrelevant to the lawsuit.

Perry’s attorneys also argue that connecting a person’s sexual orientation to allegations of sexual misconduct relies on what they describe as a harmful stereotype.

The filmmaker’s legal team claims Rodriguez’s court motion was filed after Perry rejected a proposed multi-million-dollar settlement offer.

According to the filing, Perry believes the deposition dispute is part of an effort to pressure him into resolving the lawsuit financially.

Perry’s team says he will not give in to what they characterize as settlement pressure.

    Perry Requests Sanctions Against Rodriguez

In addition to opposing Rodriguez’s motion, Perry’s attorneys are asking the court to sanction Rodriguez.

The filing requests approximately $7,300 in sanctions, alleging Rodriguez has abused the discovery process.

Whether the court grants that request will be decided through the legal proceedings.

At this stage, both sides are presenting competing arguments as the case moves through the court system.

Perry’s team maintains that the deposition issue has been misrepresented, while Rodriguez has argued that the questions he wanted to ask are relevant to his claims.

    Rodriguez’s Lawsuit Against Tyler Perry

As previously reported by TMZ, Rodriguez filed a lawsuit against Perry seeking $77 million.

In court documents, Rodriguez alleges he met Perry in 2015 at a gym and claims Perry later gave him a role in a film directed by the filmmaker.

Rodriguez alleges that after developing a relationship, Perry invited him to his home and sexually assaulted him.

According to the lawsuit, Rodriguez claims Perry made comments about oral sex before an alleged incident involving unwanted contact.

Rodriguez also alleges there was another incident involving forced contact.

    Perry has denied the allegations.

His legal team has argued that Rodriguez continued communicating with Perry after the alleged incidents and claims the allegations only emerged after Perry stopped providing financial assistance.

The claims made in the lawsuit have not been proven in court.

Sexual assault lawsuits involving public figures often involve complex legal disputes over evidence, testimony, and the discovery process.

During discovery, both sides typically seek information they believe is relevant to their claims or defenses. Courts can limit questions they determine are unrelated or inappropriate.

In this case, the disagreement centers on whether questions about Perry’s sexual orientation are relevant to Rodriguez’s allegations.

Perry’s team argues they are not, while Rodriguez has sought permission to ask those questions during the legal process.

A judge will ultimately decide how the discovery dispute moves forward.

    Why It Matters

The case has attracted attention because of Perry’s status as one of Hollywood’s most successful filmmakers and the seriousness of the allegations involved.

However, the lawsuit remains unresolved, and the court process will determine what evidence can be considered and whether either side’s claims are supported.

The dispute also highlights how legal battles involving public figures often extend beyond the original allegations into courtroom battles over procedure, evidence, and strategy.

    Human Angle

For both sides, the legal process has become a public battle involving serious claims and strong disagreements over what happened.

Rodriguez is pursuing his allegations through the courts, while Perry continues to deny the accusations and defend his reputation.

As the case continues, future court decisions will determine how the lawsuit progresses and what information may become part of the proceedings.

Tyler Perry and Mario Rodriguez remain locked in a legal battle, with both sides presenting sharply different versions of events. The next steps will depend on decisions made by the court as the case moves forward.
