Tedde Moore, the actress best known for playing the strict teacher Miss Shields in the beloved holiday classic “A Christmas Story,” has died at 79.

Moore died last Wednesday in Huntsville, Ontario, Canada, according to a Facebook post published under her name.

Her cause of death was not disclosed.

For generations of viewers, Moore was instantly recognizable as Miss Shields, the stern but memorable teacher who presided over Ralphie Parker’s classroom in the 1983 film.

But her career began on the stage years before she became part of one of the most enduring Christmas movies in American pop culture.

Moore was nominated for a Genie Award for best supporting actress in 1984 for her role in “A Christmas Story.”

Moore’s acting career began in theater, where she worked alongside a young Christopher Walken in a production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” in Stratford, Ontario.

Her stage work eventually led to the role that would define her career for generations of movie fans.

In 1983, Moore appeared in “A Christmas Story” as Miss Shields, the strict teacher of nine-year-old Ralphie Parker, played by Peter Billingsley.

The film followed Ralphie’s determined quest to receive a Red Ryder BB gun for Christmas, while his family, teachers and classmates became part of his increasingly elaborate holiday adventure.

Moore’s Miss Shields became one of the film’s memorable supporting characters.

Her stern classroom presence provided a sharp contrast to Ralphie’s imagination and his increasingly desperate attempts to convince the adults around him that the BB gun was exactly what he wanted for Christmas.

Although “A Christmas Story” became Moore’s most recognizable screen role, it was far from her only acting credit.

She appeared in films including “Second Wind,” “Murder by Decree,” “Overnight” and “Down the Road Again.”

Her television work included the TV movie “Mistletoe Over Manhattan” as well as the miniseries “The Kennedys.”

Through those projects, Moore maintained a career that extended beyond the one role that made her a familiar face to holiday audiences.

Her death was announced through a Facebook post under her name, with no cause of death released.

Before Hollywood audiences knew her as Miss Shields, Moore had already established herself as a stage performer.

Her early work included “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” in Stratford, Ontario, where she appeared alongside Christopher Walken.

That theater background preceded her transition into film and television.

    Then came “A Christmas Story.”

Released in 1983, the movie was not initially the massive holiday institution it would eventually become. Over time, however, repeated television broadcasts and growing audience affection turned the film into a Christmas staple.

Moore’s Miss Shields became part of that legacy.

The character’s strict classroom demeanor made her an especially memorable presence in Ralphie’s world, helping create some of the movie’s most recognizable school scenes.

Moore continued working after “A Christmas Story,” adding film and television credits to a career that had started on stage.

Moore’s death marks the loss of another performer from a movie that has become deeply embedded in holiday viewing traditions.

“A Christmas Story” continues to introduce new generations to Ralphie, his family and the eccentric characters surrounding his Christmas wish.

Miss Shields was one of those characters.

While Moore appeared in many other productions throughout her career, her performance as Ralphie’s teacher became the role audiences returned to every holiday season.

That kind of lasting recognition is rare for a supporting actor, particularly one whose work remains tied to a film watched repeatedly decades after its release.

There is something fitting about Moore’s most famous role being tied to a movie that has become a family holiday tradition.

For viewers who grew up watching “A Christmas Story,” Miss Shields was part of the familiar world of Ralphie’s childhood — the stern teacher whose classroom became another obstacle in his quest for the Christmas gift he wanted most.

Moore died on Wednesday, a statement shared on her Facebook page said. She was 79.

Moore’s career, however, extended well beyond that single character.

She worked in theater, film and television, building a body of work that stretched across decades.

Her passing leaves fans with the opportunity to revisit those performances, especially the one that made her unforgettable to generations of Christmas movie viewers.

Tedde Moore leaves behind a career spanning theater, film and television, but her portrayal of Miss Shields in “A Christmas Story” will remain her enduring connection to holiday movie history. She was 79.
