This Valentine’s Day, Americans are showing more dedication to their job search than their love lives. According to a recent Indeed-commissioned survey conducted by Harris Poll, 61% of workers would rather hunt for their next career move than look for love. While the job market is gradually stabilizing, the challenges of finding the right role are proving to be as daunting as finding true love—if not more so.

In this article, we’ll explore why job hunting has become such a priority, the challenges job seekers face, and how the process compares to the modern dating scene.

The Job Market: Playing Hard to Get?

At first glance, the U.S. unemployment rate of 4% might seem healthy. However, this figure masks the growing struggles of long-term job seekers. Over 1.6 million unemployed workers have been searching for a job for at least six months, with many facing a grueling process of countless applications, multiple interview rounds, and months of uncertainty.

The job market’s challenges vary widely by industry and location. While some workers have their pick of opportunities, others face fierce competition. For example, highly educated professionals like Lex Vezilj, who holds a degree in criminology and criminal justice, have struggled to transition out of industries like hospitality despite applying to hundreds of jobs.

Lex’s Perspective:
“I would rather choose a new date every day for the rest of my life than ever job hunt again. It’s brutal.”

Job Hunting vs. Dating: A Matter of Priorities

The survey revealed that 53% of respondents spend more time looking for a job than a significant other. For many, financial stability and career fulfillment take precedence over romantic pursuits.

Alexa Steinhauser, a graphic design graduate, shares this sentiment:
“If I weren’t in a long-term relationship, I would 100% choose job searching over dating. Financial security affects so many facets of our lives. It’s hard to be my best self when I’m struggling financially.”

Despite her qualifications, Alexa has faced employer ghosting, worked stopgap jobs, and even considered roles outside her field, like barista work, to make ends meet.

The Emotional Toll of Job Hunting

Job hunting can be an emotionally draining experience. Rejections, ghosting, and the constant uncertainty can take a toll on self-esteem and confidence.

Alexa’s Reflection:
“Getting rejected or constantly getting ghosted takes a really big hit on my self-esteem and how confident I feel about my skills and what I have to offer.”

This sentiment is echoed by many job seekers who feel stuck in an endless cycle of applications and rejections.

Job Hunting and Dating: Striking Similarities

The parallels between job hunting and dating are hard to ignore. Both involve:

  • Ghosting: Employers and candidates alike often disappear without explanation.
  • Overpromising: Job postings, like dating profiles, can sometimes paint an unrealistic picture.
  • Rejection: Whether it’s a job application or a date, rejection is an inevitable part of the process.

For many, the job search feels like navigating a minefield of uncertainty and disappointment.

The Upside of Job Searching

Despite the challenges, there’s a silver lining to the job search journey. For those with the security of stable employment, job hunting can be an opportunity to explore new possibilities and envision a brighter future.

Henry Siu, an economics professor, notes:
“Job-hopping is actually correlated with higher incomes because people have found better matches.”

This suggests that the time and effort invested in job searching can lead to more fulfilling and lucrative opportunities.

Expert Advice for Job Seekers

If you’re feeling stuck in your job search, here are some tips to keep moving forward:

  1. Focus on Transferable Skills: Highlight skills that can apply to various roles or industries.
  2. Network Strategically: Build connections in your desired field through LinkedIn, industry events, or informational interviews.
  3. Stay Resilient: Rejection is part of the process. Use it as an opportunity to refine your approach.
  4. Consider Temporary Roles: Stopgap jobs can provide financial stability while you continue searching for your dream role.

Conclusion

The job market’s challenges are real, but so are the rewards of finding the right role. For many, the search for a fulfilling career is just as important—if not more so—than the search for love. Whether you’re navigating rejections, exploring new opportunities, or redefining success on your own terms, remember that the journey is worth it.

Call-to-Action:
If you’re in the midst of a job search, don’t lose hope. Take inspiration from those who’ve persevered and found their perfect match. Update your resume, expand your network, and keep applying—your dream job could be just around the corner. And if you’re feeling overwhelmed, remember Alexa’s advice: “Forget what society tells us to do and what society tells us to be.” Success might not look like what you imagined, but the search continues.

Survey Methodology: This survey was conducted online within the United States by The Harris Poll on behalf of Indeed from January 30-February 3, 2025, among 1,314 U.S. adults ages 18 and older employed full-time, employed part-time, or seeking employment. The sampling precision of Harris online polls is measured by using a Bayesian credible interval. For this study, the sample data is accurate to within + /- 3.2 percentage points using a 95% confidence level.
