Jasmine Guy is addressing critics who targeted her appearance following the return of A Different World.
The actress, best known for playing Whitley Gilbert on the beloved sitcom, took to Instagram after the revival premiered on Netflix on September 24 and addressed what she described as the “brutal” nature of online commentary toward aging women.
Guy, 64, reunited with former castmates Kadeem Hardison, Darryl M. Bell and Cree Summer for the revival, giving longtime fans a chance to see the A Different World stars together again decades after the original series ended.
While the return was celebrated by many viewers, Guy said some of the online conversation focused heavily on changes in her appearance compared with her years on the original show.
She responded by sharing a new photo of herself alongside a message about the scrutiny women can face as they grow older.
“The internet can be brutal to women as we grow older,” Guy wrote. “It asks us to celebrate life while criticizing every sign that we’ve lived it.”
She acknowledged that aging brings changes, while making it clear she does not believe those changes should diminish a woman’s beauty, style or happiness.
“Growing older brings change, and I won’t pretend every change is easy,” she continued. “But beauty, style, and joy don’t have an expiration date.”
Guy also encouraged people to move beyond judging appearances and spend more time focusing on meaningful experiences and relationships.
Her message called for people to spend less time criticizing others and more time “loving each other, making memories, and living the life we’re here to live.”
The moment comes as A Different World returns to the cultural conversation.
The original NBC sitcom ran from 1987 to 1993 and became known for its portrayal of life at the fictional Hillman College, an HBCU, while tackling issues affecting Black college students and wider society.
Now, decades later, the revival brings familiar faces back together for another chapter — and Guy is making clear that growing older is part of that story, too.
